Blackhawk trigger issues

I picked up a Blackhawk 41 mag on the net. Issue is the seller didnt mention that the triiger had been messed with. When not cocked the trigger "slips" about 1/2 way... Does not turn the cyliner. When coced, single action firing, the cylinder turns fine, and it fires,,, most of the time. Some are very light strikes.


But, what is involved parts and labor wise to maybe fix this..... throw some thougts and ideas appreciated.

The Blackhawk is a Single Action the trigger will not cock the hammer or rotate the cylinder. I order to put the gun in fire mode you must use the hammer to cock the revolver and it will rotate the cylinder. As far as the lite strikes get it out to the range and shoot it see how it goes. What do you mean it fires most of the time? when it doesn't fire what does it do nothing? More info needed. ps
 
Light strikes, means the primer is not hit hard enough to fire the round. I understand SA and DA. when not cocked the trigger should not move, this one does.
 
Someone has probably altered the hammer spring, or installed one too light.

As for the trigger moving fore and aft, All my single actions do that, and not one of them is altered in any way.

Old Model or New Model? Old Model with "conversion kit"?

Yes, indeed, the Ruger triggers will exhibit some front to back movement while the hammer is "at rest". No danger.

Misfires? We need more info about the gun to prevent guessing as to the source of the issue.

New model. Ok, I never had a Blackhawk before so maybe the movement is ok. Definitely some sort of trigger work though. Very light pull. When it misfired i checked the round, and only a very slight dimple.
 
OK, I bet that the previous owner installed one of those "soft" mainsprings.
Often one will also find either a "aftermarket" trigger spring (soft) or a "tweeked" original trigger spring.

I'd remove the grip frame and replace the mainspring with a Factory part and inspect the trigger spring. Compare it's shape with the Factory original.
The image posted below should be helpful when inspecting your trigger spring.

The trigger "slipping" back a ways is caused by the transfer bar not engaging a notch or lip in the hammer face. If you look at the illustration in the previous post, at the very top of the transfer bar you can see a notch/lip in the hammer face. If that area has been altered, either the hammer face or the tip of the transfer bar, the bar will slip past the lip if you press the trigger and not stop until in contacts the bottom of the firing pin.
If you know the parts I've mentioned when looking at the illustration you can see what I mean.
It should be a straightforward fix.
 
Heywatchthis brings up an interesting point. I ALWAYS fit my New Model hammers to the transfer bars, i.e. I make CERTAIN that there is clearance between the "at rest" hammer and the transfer bar so that the transfer bar is NOT pinched between the hammer and the cylinder frame's hammer well.

Test: Unload gun. Cock hammer then pull trigger. Do NOT release the trigger until you are watching the hammer. Slowly let the trigger move forward while watching the hammer for movement. If the hammer does indeed move forward a bit then it was "pinching" the transfer bar. I take a few file strokes to the transfer bar notch on the face of the hammer and try again. When the hammer does not move when performing the above Test then you've eliminated the pinching of the transfer bar. It's my opinion that "pinched transfer bars" is the source of any/all instances where the transfer bar has broken.

One should observe the "firing pin protrusion", as well. Too much transfer bar clearance will obviously reduce firing pin travel.
