first old school recolver ive bought. im 23 and always been into the cowboy guns. went to a local gun show here and vegas and walked out paying $450. ik it needs some work i dont plan on selling is this a good deal or about average?

I would say thats about average for its condition. Don't think you got hurt on the deal. The old models are so much easier to work on than the NM!!

Here it is torn down and ready for the oil bag. I soak them over night. got everything off but the hammer, retainer screw was frozen up. Hopefully the soak will let me loosen it.
I would rather tear down 10 om as 1 NM......

glad to hear i got a decent deal. i didnt know much about blackhawks before buying it and made a blind decision to go with it. the guy seemed pretty genuine and was selling his personal collection. im excited to tear this down and want to buy that kit from you asap to get it switched over. i had no idea about the conversion kits and have learned so much about this thing its been a lot of fun. cant wait to actually shoot it…

I had a Win '92. made in 1927, 25-20, a '94 in 32 Win special made in 1917, and a couple others. Let them slip away. Still got my bolt actions!

So what is the conversion for
Basically to satisfy vulture lawyers that no more DAs could shoot themselves because they were too stupid to read the manual or too dumd to follow advice. That is the short explanation.
When Rugers first came out, they were built on the old Colt SA principle with some modifications. read better. But they maintained the ages old design requiring that they be carried with the hammer on an empty chamber. This was because when the hammer was in full down mode, it pushed the firing pin against the primer. And humans being clumsy, would drop the revolver causing it to go off if it landed on the hammer. This had been the accepted method for carrying a SA since they were born. Then a couple things happened. Some folks with$ signs in their eyes realized they could get free money by being a DA, and sued Ruger over their own stupidity. Later some more unscrupulous lawyers sued Ruger for advertising the BH as a six shooter. Finally The powers that be at Ruger decided enough was enough, and designed what is called the conversion kit to modify OM Rugers to a transfer bar configuration. It really is a marvel of engineering, but gone was the smooth trigger pull of the OM. In '73 what's known as the NEW Model SA series came out, with a built in transfer bar.
Re-conversion kits are available to reconvert back to the original OM action, which collectors and lover's of the original OM action look for. New Models can't be converted but can be carried fully loaded.
So there it is in what I wouldn't call a nut shell, more like a dump truck.

Joey has done a good job of much of the explanation of the conversion issue. But he's a little off on a few points.
As noted, Bill designed the OM single-actions to be better & stronger than the discontinued Colts etc. They were a big success.
But some folks lamented the fact it was called a six-shooter, but you should only load 5 for safety. A method that was decades old & accepted by KNOWLEDGEABLE people. You could load 6 if the need arose but for general carry, you didn't.
Well Bill came out with the New Model in 1973,, with a safety transfer bar to "fix" that issue.
A few years later,, an idiot shot himself because he had an Old Model, and didn't understand or know to not carry it that way. He sued Sturm, Ruger & Co. Up to that lawsuit,, Bill had never lost a lawsuit. In that case,, the judge ruled against Sturm, Ruger & Co with the comment; "They knew they had a defective design, and that was why they built the New Model." That judge disregarded history AND the fact that other makers still had similar actions as the OM Rugers.
That pissed off Bill and in about 1977,, he had the ugly "billboard warning" added to all his guns. That's a direct result of the lawyers & the lawsuit.
Then Bill also had his engineers design the "Transfer Safety Bar conversion" to be capable of retro-fitting all OM SA handguns. They offered the safety upgrade for free, and still do so. I'd have to go back in my records to see what year that was. Initially, when they received an OM in for any work or the upgrade,, it automatically gets the safety upgrade,, even if the customer didn't request it. But the OM parts are returned to the customer. And they would mark the frame, on the inside,, hidden by the grip frame with a circled "R" to show they had performed the safety upgrade. That was done to be capable of proving to any future jury or judge that they had done more than their due diligence for safety. Now,, I don't think they mark the frames anymore.
And if you have a gun that has had the upgrade,, and want to return it to "as shipped" with the OM action,, you can do so easily. When they built the upgrade parts, it was designed to where no modifications were done to the gun that affect the value or function.
So,,, in the case of the new member here,, he needs the OM parts, and Joey is offering help.

my OM .30 Carb came converted, and was un-converted before my background check came back... I'll have to check the grip frame to see if it is stamped...
Kinda reminds me of a family story I have heard for years.
My Grandpap grew up and died in Montana, Born in 1902, he was too young for War 1 and too old for War 2. But he grew up loving the old revolvers that Colonel Colt made, and the Winchester lever guns, and had a great respect for Winchester bolt actions. His favorite caliber was 44-40, for both lever guns and revolvers. He used to say "If it can't be killt with a 44-40, it don't need to be kilt!" Grandpa loved to hunt the mountains of Montana, for food mainly.
Back in the '40's there was a considerable population of grizzlies in the mountains, so grandpap always carried his Colt Frontier strapped to his side and his lever gun. He knew to carry the old Colt on an empty chamber, but when in griz country he often broke the rule, saying he would rather be kilt by dropping the revolver as die for lack of 1 bullet to a griz.
Well, this trip was to the mountains not far from the Wyoming border, 'pap was after venison steak. He had apparently set down at the base of a tree to enjoy a sandwich and the view. That;s when he heard the unmistakable snuffing of a bear. He stood up just as the griz charged him, rifle in hand and got off 1 shot, He then reached for his Colt. but in the rush to draw, it slipped from his hands. This particular day, he had broken the "empty chamber" rule and had it loaded to the gills. The bear was almost in reach of him when the Colt fell on a rock. The resulting discharge hit the bear right between the eyes. killing him instantly. Problem was, he was so close to grandpap he fell on him. Thats where 'pap was found 3 days later, deader than a doornail under that bear, but with a grin on his face. So breaking the rule had saved his life for maybe 2 seconds, and that sixth bullet had kilt the griz!
