Years ago I bought a Braun 7 because I didn’t want the hassle of using a regular razor, but haven’t used it for years as I had a beard and mustache. But I shaveD clean and now find that the Braun does not give a very close smooth shave. Looking for recommendations about what electric razor will be able to give as close to a real razor type shave as possible.

I just bought a Braun Series 9 electric shaver. Absolutely tremendous! Just a few passes, and
I'm shaved closer than any of my blade-razors. Don't know what makes this new razor different, as none of my other electric razors will shave me at all.

Wow, just saw the price on the 9. $400 from Braun, $310 on Amazon. Instead I just ordered a new cartridge for my 7, for $34.
I use a newer Braun and like it. Shaves pretty close...but... if I want a really close clean
shave a blade still is cleaner. Some days if I want to stay cleaner shaved looking longer,
I'll shave with the Braun then go back over with whatever the latest and greatest 4 or
5 blade razor. Just wet the skin and go sorta "against the grain" I know it's taking off
hair because when you rinse it shows in the sink and you can feel a difference.
Just the electric is good enough for me about 75% of the time.

On my Braun the manual says to shave before you wash your face and I’ve noticed it does seem to shave better on a dry/unwashed face. Or just relax your standards. :wink:

I have found no electric shaver to give as close and luxurious a shave as using mug soap and a good safety razor.
Too many men today rush through the shave and miss out on the hot towel application and the aroma of good mug soap. Shaving should be a pleasurable experience!

I couldn't agree more, Bob.
For me, a nice Gillette Silver Blue blade, a brush and and good soap are the way to start the day. Lots of hot water and a little Bay Rum or Clubman afterwards. A cup of coffee and I'm good to go.

I Remer you could go to a barber shop and get a shave. Comforting hot towel warm lather clean shave. Best shave I get now is after a hot sauna.

I never used an electric razor don't have a clue!
When I was a young man I grew a beard for the winter, in the spring I'd go
to Christopher's Barber Shop for the full treatment hot towel and all.

I was on R&R in Tokyo and there was a barber shop in the lobby of the hotel in which I was staying. So, one day I decided to treat myself to a barber shop shave. As I went in, I noticed the barbers were Japanese girls. Never had had a girl barber before. Everything on the price list totaled just abut $7.00 so I figured I'd get the works.
I got my hair cut and shampoo, then she pulled the lever and I flopped back looking up at the ceiling. She steamed my face, lathered me up, and stropped the straight razor.
As she gently pulled my nose up for shaving my upper lip, she said "Sayonara!"

And if it does last 7 years, then $300 isn’t that bad of a price. I paid $200 for my toothbrush. One of those electric kinds. If it keeps the dentist bills down, then it’s worth it, and so far it has, that was 3 years ago. Plus, have you priced razors lately? Over 7 years I’m sure I’ve spent more than $300 in razor cartridges for the a hand held kind. They are about $4 each, give or take.
Sorry, but my 60+ year old Gilette razor works just fine. Only problem is finding double edge blades...so when I found them, I bought enough to last me until I'm on the brown side of the grass. Those stupid 27 blade razor refills at $5.00 apiece (or more) don't work any better... in fact, my son tried one and said it's worse. He has a heavy beard like me, and those multi-blade razors just clog up with the stubble they shaved off... and they're hard to clear, unlike the old double-edge razors, which open up with a turn on the handle and rinse clear.
Double edged blades are easily found on Amazon, and cheaply. I pay around $15 for 100 Gillette Silver Blues, and less than $10 for Astras, also a 100 pack. I get 5 shaves per blade.
