Well with Sears and MW getting a thread , anyone remember Best Co ( I think that was the name ) back in the 70’s and early 80’s. I bought a REM 788 for 169.00 there in either 1980 or 81. They had reloading supplies as well. Bought 8lbs of Unique for I believe 48.00

I do not remember that. I do remember Montgomery Ward Western Field, Western Auto Revelation, and Gambles maybe Hawthorne?

I remember Best Products well, they had a fairly large presence in Va. as they were based in Richmond and they were known for their bizarre showroom architecture. Sold toys, electronics, appliances, jewelry and yes sporting goods. Shopped there often back in the day but they went out of business in the 90’s. I once installed a generator system at their main computer center (in Ashland or Hanover) to keep the batteries charged during power outages.

Best Products was where I bought my original Atari 2600 (1978?) and a couple years later first stereo as a teenager. Never saw any firearms or related products there. The direct competition to them at the time was W. Bell & Company.

There were BEST stores in the Houston area where I lived from birth to age 5. I thought they were more like a cross between Service Merchandise and SEARS.

I bought my 870 Wingmaster from Service Merchandise. That and bricks of .22’s winchester superX for $9.99

It was a different experience. Walk around and take notes on what you wanted to buy, hand the paper to the cashier pay your money and your stuff came from out back on a conveyer belt.

Pretty efficient overall.

Down the street was MVP SPORTS. They had a decent firearms dept.

I had an uncle who lived in Houston who would send me crappie jigs, spinner baits and Rat-L-Traps from Best! I bet I still have some Rat-L-Trap boxes with the price label on them. Too cold to look at this time! 🤣

No Best Company in my corner of the Midwest. We did have S&H Green Stamp stores though.
My brother got his .22 rifle with Green Stamps in the '60's.
I got a telescope. I can't remember all the other stuff we got.
Our mom also collected Yellow Stamps.

Reminiscing,
Tom

My Dad worked for ABS out of WI from 63-68. He got green stamps for meeting and exceeding quotas, they would give him the stamps in sealed cellophane wrapped packages. The redemption centers didn’t require to put them in the books. That was Christmas as I recall
