I'm currently reading the collected works of Edgar Allan Poe, specifically the "Tales" and while I consider myself reasonably well rounded in the usage of our English language I've been humbled in just the first two pages reading Poe's tales. We were compelled to read some of the works from Poe, Twain, Tolstoy, Kipling and Vonnegut among other writers and write book reports on them while I was in PUBLIC high school. I suspect lofty reading like this is gone from schools in favor of simplified and boiled down news snippets, such a shame.
Anyway, Poe was not without his detractors and his overall style was disdained by many but he had a command of the language that is just wonderful to read... again.
Bob Wright, I know you're a fan of the English language where are you?
