Actually there are some high end tequilas that are pretty good and can be drunk or better yet sipped straight.
Back when I went to and worked at the yearly National Chimney Sweep Guild conventions I belonged to a small group called, "The friends of Don." This was named at the Don Julio tequila. More often than not a late afternoon meeting would lead to a late night BS session.

They would NEVER buy Jose Cuervo. But would purchase.

Actually not sure about currently but Jose Quevo(sp?) used to offer a once a year run of tequila, I forget what they called it but it came in a wooden box with a different artistic design every year... cost was just over a hundred bucks and it was some more smooth easy to drink stuff.
the interesting thing about tequila is the really high end stuff is aged all of 3 years or a bit more....
