What is the quality level of Bear & Son Cutlery. I just bought a new 10 inch Damascus Blade and a Stag or Jigged Bone handle Bowie Knife with a nice leather sheath, from this company. At Cabela's Bargain Cave in Wichita Ks. I have always wanted one like this, and IMHO it looks really nice. But I am not much of a knowledgeable knife person anymore. The Knife was originally priced at $150.00 but I bought it for $65.00. I am sorry but I am old now and I don`t know anything about sending pictures. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

A few years ago, I got three of their folders from a well known online source. Priced at about half of normal retail price (maybe 25% of MSRP), I didn't know what I was getting into. Very simply, I paid too much. I think the materials were ok--stag handles, everyday quality stainless blades, brass liners--but the workmanship was atrocious. Kinda like those $1.99 Pakistani knives in the pickle jar at the hardware store checkout stand. One blade on a muskrat just flops around, the gut hook on a bird knife took some work in the vise to get it to fit in its slot so it would close, and a medium stockman looked like they'd tossed it in the box before it got to the guy with the last belt sander who gets everything looking like it fits.

I dunno if they were dumping some rejects or what. Somehow I figured if they were blems/seconds/whatever, they should have been advertised as such. Because of what I'd paid, I didn't bother with sending 'em back, and haven't tried the brand or the vendor again since.

They look pretty nice to me! I just went over to their website, they have an online catalog.

Is yours made in America? It looks like they are really promoting the fact they are made in Jackson, Alabama.

Had two, both junk, sadly. I returned the first to B&S along with a nice letter explaining the whys'n'wherefores and to this very moment have yet to hear a word from them. But it's only been five years or more so i'll wait.........
You wanna fine Bowie that works, buy a COLD STEEL TRAILMASTER!!! You're damned right it costs a LOT more, and for the very same reason Cadillacs cost a lot more than Chevys.
REMEMBER: Cheap is always too damned expensive, ALWAYS !!!
And so it goes...

Hi,

Yes, US made, Kevin. I understand that plant they're talking about was fairly new at the time I got the knives I did, and perhaps training a workforce was a far bigger chore than they anticipated. I dunno... But I always thought when you're trying to make a name for yourself, the garbage should go out the back door, not the front!

Thanks Guys for your comments and opinions, on the quality levels of Bear & Sons Cutlery. I sure was hopeing for betters reviews, from all of you Guys. I would have thought that Cableas would carry a better quality level of Knives. But I guess not. But the Bear & Sons knife I bought sure is a pretty rascale, to bad the quality level is not up to par. There is a sucker born every minute. Thanks again for all your help.

I own way too many knives, but have only bought one from Bear & Son, a fixed blade bird and trout type. It arrived duller than dull, basically no edge at all. And I was never able to put a sharp edge on it.

Got one as a Christmas present from a friend a few years ago, a folder. Looks good, but it came as dull as a butter knife and I never was able to give it a decent edge, although I tried. It's sitting in a drawer someplace.
