It's that time of year again. Last night, an exhibition game Texas Rangers vs. KC Royals. Texas won of course! The announcer said 16,000 people were there last night. At my wife's company, groups of workers get together and buy a season pass, then split up the games. I think we are going to about 9 games this year. I'm looking forward to it.

Jim, there were a lot of foul balls. One came down on our row but over about 4 seats. Another kid caught it. My wife got scared and covered our daughter's head. Those balls hit the stands hard. It would definitely hurt to get clubbed on the head by a foul ball.

My daughter took baby granddaughter Iris to Royals games last year and she watched on TV with her dad sitting in her baby carrier. The kid likes going to the games. Big eyed the whole time.
I loved baseball as a kid, played little league on a good team that won the Oklahoma state AAU tourney when I was 12.
But then, money, crybaby players, the waste of money aggravation that is the Truman Sports Complex in KC, Pete Rose denied Hall of fame, ball player strike, how expensive it is where a grandpa cannot afford to take his grandson to the allstar game or a world series game. I won't spend money on MLB any more. I will go to AAA game at a cool brickyard and enjoy the beers and hot dogs, I will go to a summer league like American Legion ball was when I was a kid.

Don, I can't even afford to take myself to a World Series game, let alone my wife or daughter. I hate to even think what we spent on food last night. 9 bucks for ice cream, $10 for a hot dog. Sweetie had a beer etc...

Just after Christmas we went to a Dallas Cowboys game. How terrible, it was noisy and people cussing and just being not family friendly.

Then the game last night, I didn't hear any curse words, (I don't cuss and when people cuss around me, it grates on my nerves) and there were tons of kids. My wife and I were talking about the differences.

An aside: Ya know, One time I was in Jersey, walking down the sidewalk with my then 3 year old daughter. Two teenagers were walking in front of us, cussing. They turned, saw my daughter and apologized to me. Yes, New Jersey....a very family friendly place, but I digress....

Salty language is def. not tolerated at Progressive Field in Cleveland. The guy in front of me was lucky the cop gave him a 2nd chance. Drunk, of course.

One of the perks of my charter bus job after I retired was taking folks to Mariners games in Seattle. Drivers got in free. The only drawback was that I always had to leave at the end of the 7th to get the bus ready and in position for the folks at the end of the game.

The definition of professional sports has become "a bunch of overpaid, spoiled brats crying when they things don't go their way". Oh, and add very poor examples in general and of sportsmanship in particular.

AND the stadiums are ALL built on the backs of local taxpayers who not even CARE about baseball and will probably NEVER attend a game.
I think its past time for ALL Professional sports to start paying corporate taxes and building their OWN stadiums AFTER they pay FULL price for the property INSTEAD OF Government Imminent domain STEALING it from citizens;
Let's ALSO end any and ALL Subsidies because those teams NEVER produce the benefits they claim they cause.

Personally, I love baseball(particularly the Orioles).
I typically go to several games a year at Camden Yards, although last year I only got to one game in April because of my health problems.

Hope to be able to see 5-6 this year.

I agree with the angst some have about the bloated salaries and the burden on taxpayers for the facilities, but nobody forces them to vote for the politicians that make those deals with the owners. I don't particularly like the high ticket prices or the cost of food and drinks at the ballpark, but that is one way I choose to spend my entertainment dollars. Really not much different cost wise than going to an IMAX movie in 3D with a nice dinner afterwards.
When the cost of going to the handful of games I attend each year becomes too expensive, I will simply stop going. All 162 games are on satellite, so I can see every game if I so choose. I feel the same way about movies, when the cost to go to the theater becomes a burden, I will simply wait for a movie to be available on satellite/Blu-ray.
I just enjoy the atmosphere and ambience of the ballpark. It's a fun experience, whether I go with my son, my wife or a group of friends.

For me, a AAA game is a lot better than a pro game. In Appleton, Wisconsin, we have the Timber Rattlers... a farm team for the Brewers. Tickets, beer, and hot dogs are a fraction of what they cost at a big league game, parking is free, there are no bad seats, and you get to see some good players really busting their chops hoping to get to the Big Dance.

Baseball is special to me. My dad was a journeyman minor leaguer, I was pretty good, he never tried to relive his career through me and I always appreciated that. He's 87 and in a home now as his body has failed him but his mind is sharp as ever. I can't do a lot for him anymore, we talk every day, but every spring I buy the him the MLB package. His room becomes party central for other residents who enjoy baseball, that really makes him happy, which makes me happy.
