Back Yard Critter (UPDATE)

Jack Ryan;

"Caught a racoon under the apple tree today. Thought I'd try something new since I was going to town any way. Found him a nice quiet spot in a little park with some picnic tables, trash cans, in a neighborhood where people like to feed the animals and he can find plenty of bird seed. He seemed anxious to get busy."

As noted above,, it's likely illegal to relocate a raccoon there. I'm not up to date on your state laws,, but I'd bet you did commit a crime.
If you put the raccoon on state or federal property,, I KNOW you committed a felony.

How do I know?

I'm a State certified Animal Damage Control Agent.

And it's also likely you are supposed to have a PERMIT to trap outside of Indiana trapping season.

Next,, how would you handle the extensive legal & medical bills if you are/were caught and had an accident, where a first responder got bitten or scratched by an animal in your possession illegally?

In most states,, you MUST have the WRITTEN permission to relocate any wildlife upon any private property,, and it's REQUIRED for any State or Federal property. And of course,, that's AFTER you followed all the normal state laws about trapping & such.
I checked before I commented, and that is pretty much exactly what the regs are.

If you can't (and sadly I'm getting there) or won't, hire a professional. No idea what a pro costs, but likely a heck of a lot less than the fines alone.

I doubt it, I'd bet the fines are worse... used to forget to pay the sales tax I have to collect for items I sell customers... state tax person would spend 10 minutes with a calculator and looking in a book and the 'late penalty' always came out to the same... twice what you would have owed if you had paid on time. I once said I thought that seemed a little harsh and she said the other choice was to pay the amount and the fine for not paying which was $500.

An example of the type of critter we get, the big furry kind, lol !! 😲

That park is gonna get FULL! Got a HUGE old racoon today. Glad I have such a nice open space far away from me. No one ever uses that place any way.

Chipmunk Disaster Flow Chart:

County: The property owner is solely responsible to get rid of any infestations outside or inside.
Me: I'm being invaded from up the street, I pay taxes, do something!
County: She can have a brush pile in her front yard, you can't grow tomatoes in buckets in your back yard, it's an indigenous rodent, we can't touch it.
State: Maybe some predators will move in.
Me: They're destroying property.
State: You can only shoot it, or put it in a gas chamber.
Me: I'm clean out of tiny gas chambers.
County: We don't have any law against you shooting it, but we'll arrest you if you fire a shot and make up a law later to charge you with. You should hire an exterminator.
Me: I pay taxes for you people to do the exterminating, already. If you don't like the way I solve your problem, then don't make me solve your problem for you.

You are here.

I find it sad that a person I thought had some intelligence would read my post as well as a few others above & realize their mistakes. Yet,, you obviously have chosen to ignore the laws, and risk potential serious legal issues.

Since you have chosen to capture & relocate raccoons that are on your property,, to a public piece of property,, OR are choosing to trespass upon a piece of private property,,, I'd like to give you something else to consider. How will you feel if you catch someone coming onto YOUR property dumping animals or trespassing?

How will you feel if a child is on that piece of property,, and gets bitten or scratched by a raccoon? How will you feel if that child is YOUR child,, or the child of a good friend?

Think it can't happen?

That same logic is why we have people shot because they thought the gun wasn't loaded. Or they live in a world where; "It won't happen to me."

I caught a big raccoon myself last night at a customer's house. When she called me to let me know I had one,, she also was a bit worried & upset. Her 9 year old grandson was visiting,, and she didn't know how to explain to him how the raccoon must be euthanized. I calmly gave her some things to say to him. BUT,, I also stressed that they all needed to stay away from my cage until I removed the raccoon.

So,, keep ignoring the laws. Keep on believing you won't get caught. Keep on believing nothing will happen.
You may get away with it.

But how will you feel if you get caught or if someone gets hurt or even dies due to rabies?

What I think about with this catch and release some where else idea is that these critters more than likely have a family and you are displacing it... probably just the weak wimpy liberal in me... but it is what hurts me. Over the years I've had to go remove dead baby raccoons from a chimney because the mother went out at night and got run over and the babies starved.. homeowners surely could hear them but did nothing until they could not stand the smell...

Am I allowed to euthanize the state's wildlife?

"Am I allowed to euthanize the state's wildlife?"

It depends.

During hunting/trapping seasons,, you can do so under a hunting or trapping license. So yes.

OR,,,,,,,, if you get a state issued depredation permit,, YES,, you must do so,,,, if the species poses a potential problem. A raccoon is high on the list of rabies vectors,, and as such,, no relocation is allowed,, they must be euthanized.

If an animal is inside your home,, and you catch it,, and take it outside & release it immediately upon your own property,, that's also allowed.

In Jack Ryan's posts,, he's catching a potential rabies vector animal,, and taking it to a city or county, or state park area. NOT his own property. He is releasing a potentially diseased & dangerous animal on other property he does not own.
He should kill the raccoons. And the trapping & all should be under a state issued permit if Indiana has a program like that.

I don't go outside without a firearm,Black bears a big problem, fox, fisher cats mean sob”s, Coyote”s,eagles, hawks falcons, squarls, chipmunks, snakes, groundogs, turkeys. Well I rolled out with the Knee Scooter onto the back deck and into my wife's potting room this morning to get some bird seed for the front yard chipmunks and birds and some para-cord to secure my pack /holster to the basket of this scooter and low and behold Little Slinky, that's what I''ve got to name this black snake that was curled up by the bucket of bird seed. Now we have Slinky: about 8ft, Slinky Jr... 6.5 ft and little Slinky 2ft... I swear I think there is one about four feet somewhere down in my storage area.

I don't want to step on the raccoon trap thread, and this one already went through enough cycles on relocation that maybe we can just move past that and revel in the view from the bottom of the hole they put us in.

This morning I'm putting postage on a stack of 36 page letters going all over county government concerning the chipmunk issue, and my desire for them to do what the code says they are supposed to do.

Recap:
County departments: We can't do anything about indigenous species, even though that's not what the code says.
State conservation department: Indigenous species own the place, maybe some snakes and coyotes will move into your suburban heaven. You're not allowed to relocate. Shoot or trap only. No kill traps above water. Any animal that survives capture must be killed by shooting or gas chamber. No drowning, no stabbing, no bashing.
State law: Shooting allowed on private land.
County law: No trapping outdoors. Invite the varmint into your home and ask him nicely to lay his head on this big rat trap.
County police: You fire a gun in this county anywhere but an indoor shooting range and you're going to jail, we don't care what the law says or allows.

Well, I just found three state laws prohibiting private citizens from owning or possessing a gas chamber or anything that dispenses poison gas.

The one and only legal option: shooting. Whoever said guns don't solve problems never read the law.

They need to change the county motto to:
"Government of the chipmunk, for the chipmunk, and by the chipmunk.

Do you need me to trap you some coyotes?

I have a mockingbird problem. These are the meanest birds I have encountered. They go atter my blue birds, and when the brood leaves the nest, they kill them!! There are probably 10 nesting pairs around our house. They are the state bird of TN, don't know what the fine would be for "thinning " them out. I am sure it would be considerable. " I think he went into the woods to kill a mockingbird." Dud Walsh to Briscoe Darling on The Andy Griffith show. Maybe I need Ernest T. here for a while!!

Seriously, is your live trap secured to the ground? If not, they can invert it and then the doors open up. Make sure it is secured to the ground. ( Spoke as someone who lost his laying duck and had to trap a raccoon and opossum).

Bewar
Blume send those snakes to me.......you bring feed to chipmunks but I want to bring the chipmunks to something to feed on them....I swear you shoot 1 and 3 more take it's place.
BEWARE what you ask for, the best chipmunk removal snakes tend to be poisonous pit vipers!

They don't make for great neighbors!
JMHO YMMV.

Principal Skinner: Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend.
Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards?
Principal Skinner: No problem. We simply unleash wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.
Lisa: But aren't the snakes even worse?
Principal Skinner: Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.
Lisa: Then we're stuck with gorillas!
Principal Skinner: No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.
Lisa: Hmm.

Chipmunks and Gorillas are both warm-blooded, cold blooded critters are exceptionally slow in winter conditions. Thus they become items at dinner on the table. 😳😄😂👍
