I watched numerous newscasts concerning this event down in Houston, Texas, and am somewhat baffled about what took place. And now it appears law suits are being filed.

From what I have seen, a shabbily dressed performer was shouting backed by pyrotechnics, all inciting a mob of people. Apparently his efforts were aimed to work up a crowd, who, after enduring such antics, they stampeded much like a herd of cattle set off by noise. And reacted in much the same way as a herd of animals.

How have we come to such a state where noise replaces talent, where audience appreciation is measured by the height of frenzy?

God help us all.

You just described the new genre of music called "hip-hop"......used to be called "punk rock". The guy that was performing at this "concert" considers chaos as part of his act.

Here's a really long article on the entire mess !! Sounds like both the concert organizers and Houston city officials should be facing huge lawsuits, as well.

The type of "music" isn't necessarily the cause. The girls 'swooned' for young Frankie (Sinatra), then we had swivel hips Elvis, then along came the Beatles, then the Rolling Stones. All at some point had crowds out of control.

This type of "music" IS the cause. Officials at the event had 20 ambulances standing by, because they anticipated huge problems........problems "caused" by the main performer........problems he had "caused" at previous concerts. His whole schtick is to get the crowd "out of control".

Oh, yeah. And the 20 ambulances were not nearly enough......they ended up needing 62.

I can’t see how the type of music caused this. It’s the type of seating, or lack thereof. It’s music. It might not be your type of music, but still, some people like it.

It’s a shame lawyers have to be called in to straighten everything out. But that’s the type of world we live in.

I had to look it up, but I remember a WKRP episode, where they talked about people killed at a concert. It was the WHO concert in 1979. 11 people died because of the seating arrangements.

Similar to this, but vastly different music.

there. I said it.
Some like Perry Como and some like KISS. Some like Country and some RAP. Some call one thing "music" and others call the same thing "junk". Bottom line; it's whatever floats your boat.

It's obvious you didn't read the article I posted a link to. Here.....let me help you out:

“Y’all know what you came to do,” he said, turning to the crowd, before the music started up again. Scott asked the tens of thousands in front of him to make “the ground shake.”

The words sent a bolt of energy to the already frenzied fans, Sayadian said.

Everyone around them started jumping, stomping on the ground. They joined in, carried along with the mass of bodies. “You kind of have to,” Sayadian said.

“You become one with the crowd,” echoed his friend, Bacon.

“People usually fall and you just pick people up,” he said, recalling his experiences attending the Astroworld event in previous years. “This time, people couldn’t do that. There were too many people. You could not move. Everywhere you were, people were pushing you. Every time he performs, people get excited.”

The "artist" is directly responsible for the mayhem.........pure and simple. By way of his so-called music he encourages the exact thing that happened. At this point, I don't even care. You can excuse his behavior in whatever way you like. I'm done with this one.

As to whether the "music" was at the cause I can only inject this:

Adolph Hitler knew the value of music in working up a crowd and/or instilling a sense of duty. He used bands and songs to turn the populace against the Jews and to accept the Nazi party. Through his choice of music and fiery rhetoric he orchestrated the killing of over six million Jews.

Yes, music played an important part.

I have been a member of local, part time bar bands my whole life. I played many hundreds of paid gigs and quite a few unpaid charity gigs. I've seen plenty of scuffles, but nothing close to the carnage in the Houston RAP concert.

It's not the music. It's the people and their culture; inner city people to be specific. I've played some rough venues, but nothing is as bad as an inner city venue. I steer clear of them in favor of rural crowds.

A bad crowd that begins to frequent a nice venue can destroy it. Twice I've seen venues get closed down because management refused to address bad actors messing up the place. Once the scum people establish a foothold, good paying customers and decent bands go elsewhere.

The worst was a local hotel. They had one of the best clubs in town. Inner city folks quickly realized management turned a blind eye to their antics and decended upon the place in droves. As a result, business customers cancelled long-term agreements. The place became a jungle. My band stopped playing there. They lasted maybe 6 more months before they went out of business, bulldozed what was left and sold the empty lot.

I have never heard of a Parrot Head stomping on someone at a Jimmy Buffet Concert :D :D :D :D

Hi,

Did anyone ever die at a Grateful Dead concert of anything but old age? Ok, maybe an occasional OD... Seems Jerry drew some decent sized crowds and if memory serves they were pretty peaceful.

Maybe the rappers should try their local motorcycle club for security?

does this not happen at soccer (football) games over seas?

falls back on a simple fact of nature... pack enough critters in too small a space and bad things happen.... covid is an example as well as this latest stupidity....

Speaking of Mick... I was watching a year or so back a documentary of them in South America.... doing concerts in soccer stadiums... they would not say how many people were in the stadium... but they were packed.... they ended up doing a free concert in Cuba... over 2 million showed up.

Actually The Dead (among others) played at Altamont Speedway in 1969 where they used Hells Angles as security, there were several deaths there. Also in 1996 The Meadowlands in NJ at a sellout crowd for Jimmy Buffett there was a riot. Different music genres similar results. These large venues fail at crowd control either from bad planning or not hiring decent security or both. My advice coming from someone over 60, stay away!

Crowds, the common denominator..

I did them when younger. Further studies/history & thoughts, plus some maturity told me they weren't heathy. I've stopped.

Crowd to Mob in 30 seconds.

Been there, done that, through with it. Flying commercial might be past my tolerance these days, as I feel like I'm livestock in their lines.

Interesting side note.... guy on the security team at my church works for the city and he says there are 150 cameras in and around downtown Greenville here. they are connected to a computer that is not looking at individuals but monitoring and analyzing the moment of people... groups....

Yeah, but in those days the girls liked to throw their undies to Elvis.

I just discovered who Travis Scott is because of this.
If its not 'lets go brandon'...I can't listen to hiphop.

More than 300 lawsuits totaling a staggering $3 billion have been filed over the Astroworld disaster on November 5 that ultimately claimed the lives of ten people.
