AR 556 adjustable stock question

Just bought a new AR 556, mainly for target shooting. I bought the 8502 which means it's state compliant. I live in Colorado, which restricts magazine size, but not adjustable stocks. Can I replace the stock with an adjustable one? If so, any recommendations? Don't want to break the bank.

I haven't examined the 8502, but most M4-style "fixed" stocks are pinned to make them non-adjustable and usually the pin that locks them can be driven or drilled out to re-convert them. Someone else will know for sure.

You may have to replace the buffer tube as well... on the compliant SR22 rifles, not only are the stocks pinned to the tube but the tube is not finish machined with the detents on the underside.

So if I replace the buffer tube, I'm good to go? My concern is that the buffer tube is somehow pinned to prevent that.

I have found kits online which include the stock, buffer tube and springs and small parts.

The tube should not be pinned to the lower receiver... the castle nut might be staked, but that's not hard to overcome. You only need to back it off far enough to let the plate clear the hole in the rear of the lower, so the tube can be rotated.

Keep in mind the front edge of the tube holds the spring loaded buffer retainer in place, so be sure to restrain it as you unscrew the tube.
