Ammo Recommendations for SR9?

Any recommendations on ammo for the SR9? I tend to go with the heavier bullet weights, as I consider penetration one of the most important factors in self-defense. However, reliability trumps even that--if it doesn't go bang every time I pull the trigger, I don't want it. After that comes "practical" reliability. By that I mean the ability to keep the shots into a small enough area in either the COM or the head "T" to dissuade a bad guy from any further aggression.

Thanks in advance for suggestions/recommendations.

Many of us reload so we have a lot more options. However, I'd suggest you let your gun tell you which ammo works the best. If you stay with American made ammo, you'll have a better chance of getting uniform ammo that's reliable.
Besides, by purchasing several types of ammo, and testing them will give you lots more practice time!

contender,

I'm not a reloader, but I know that your statement about the gun telling me what it likes best is spot on. Until recently I had a Walther PPS and it shot its best groups and closer to the POA with 147 grain bullets. I probably have 8 - 10 different types of 9MM on hand, so I'll go out and shoot them all and "let the gun decide."

Thanks for your help.

My experience with my SR9 is that just about any FMJ practice ammo with brass casings will go where you want it to on a self defense target. (I don't use Wolf or other other imports, except S&B).

For carry I go exclusively with Hornady Critical Defense or TAP FPD. Both very high quality Silver Nickel plated casings, low flash powder. Totally reliable. Check out Hornady.com for Hornady Critical Defense & TAP.

IMHO for a non-reloader, Ruger & Hornady is the perfect match.

steveodtw,

Thanks for the recommendations. If the weather shapes up later today I will be at the range trying it out with 8 - 10 different loads I have on hand, from 115 gr to 147 gr.

Tequila Jake,
I'm interested what you find out at the range. The range usually sells me 115 FMJ Win. White box, American Eagle, MagTech. Your SR9 is capable of clearing out a large 3" hole at 7-10 yards. (with a few flyers generated my impatience, distractions or lapse of concentration). with any of these. Have a blast.

steveoldtw,

I'm going to post my "range report" as a separate thread so more folks will get a look at it. Should be up in a few minutes.
