aggravating cooler problem

I've been running my mastercool since 1995, clean and paint every time I change the "pad"...
About every 5 years... It's gotten worse since Tucson went to the CrAP water.

Are you kidding? I change the pads for new ones every year. Enough with people telling me I have to scrape the stuff off the louvers. What do you think I have been doing for 40 some years?

I just asked if there was some chemical that would actually dissolve the stuff. It seems that there is not so I will continue to scrape the stuff off.

I've been climbing ladders to maintain my, and Mom's, swamp coolers for 50 years. Hard to change, once the builder puts it up...

Not really. mini splits are easy to install and much cheaper than traditonal ac ducting. They do cost more to operate, but the maintenace is easier, and you do not have the chance of airborne virus' like legionella.

Example, local hospital did a large remodel. It included a new shop for the maintenance folks. But they cheaped out and installed a swamp cooler. Two things happened almost from the beginning. Huge mold problem on just about all of the surfaces. They then got me involved and I did indepth biological testing and found among other critters, legionella living in the swamp cooler. They closed the building until it could be completely cleaned of mold and a proper AC system installed.

I've sprayed vinegar multiple times on a test section. It won't touch the stuff.

Did you use regular vinegar or cleaning vinegar?

Never heard of cleaning vinegar. Although, looking at your avatar, I don't know if you are just spoofing me.

OK, i just checked on the net and cleaning vinegar is a real thing. I'll see if any of the stores around here have it but I doubt it.

I can usually find it in the cleaning section of the grocery store.

Some of the vinegar is distilled to focus it's purpose. There is a very concentrated form of the acid called 'glacial acetic acid'
which is bad news to work with.
I think the Jungle Web Site sells tiny bottles of it.
It really is what I would call dangerous stuff to work with, I wouldn't recommend using it on anything.
Just a tip from morning brain rattles.
