Advice Needed RE: NR-4FL

I've been looking for a old model Single Six with the 4 5/8" barrel, but they're relatively few and far between.

There are a couple of these "NR-4FL" models available.

Couple of questions for experts here:

1. Are they "rare" enough to be worth $400?

2. Can old-style wooden stocks be purchased and will they fit?

Paid $320 for a NIB about two years ago. Terry is the expert on the NR-4FL and has compiled a list of known serial numbers that he posted here some months ago. As I recall, there are less than 200 known.

No problem, it seems that I missed his original post where he was looking
for an OM .22 cal. single-Six 4 5/8" convertable with box.
I have one that I would sell and that was what the PM was about.

Could you PM me the whole serial # of your gun? The highest # I have
reported is 268-55630. Your gun would also be the first gun in the 268-56XXX block reported. To my way of thinking this would be near the tail end of these guns (200). Now whatch one turn up in the 57XXX block :wink:

Chances are that by now there are more than 200 of the NR4FL. Seems that Ruger kept dribbling them out for a while, but at this time I'm not sure where the estimate would be today. Its still an uncataloged model so I'd still say there are less than 500.

#'s are going up. I will have NR-4FL 268-57296 in my hot little hands tomorrow about 11 am. And to answer one of doc's original questions, Yes, they are well worth that quoted asking price considering what they cost wholesale.

In answer to the question about old grips fitting the NR-4FL the answer is Yes they fit right on with no alterations, ie not necessary to relieve the grips for the internal lock.

Or could it be converted to the early system if one had the early parts?

ALL New Models have the transfer bar system and can NOT be converted to an Old Model configuration. While I have not tried it I dont think that the
Main Spring with the lock will work in pre-lock models. May someone else has tried it and will chime in.

I also noticed in your grip swap picture that the grip screw does not seem
to be flush in the picture of the wood like the plastic. I am presuming that you just did not tighten it clear up for photo purposes?

NR-4FL

The "L" stands for LOCK.

The easiest way to eliminate the lock is to change grip frames. There ARE other solutions, however I'll refrain from discussing them on the Forum.

Right Terry, grip screw is not tightened. Will get you the serial #'s as soon as FedEx arrives today and the guns are actually in hand.

As far as the lock goes doc, to me it's a non-issue. Although almost all of my Rugers are old models the "go to the desert gun" is a 3 yr old new model .45 LC with lock. The only tme I have seen or thought about it was shortly after I got it and replaced the plastic grips with rosewoods.
