I advertised something on "Craig's List" and got an offer of payment by "cashiers check" supposedly drawn on a local bank (Gainesville, FL area) .
Here's a part of the email response:

I'm a very busy woman. My
mode of payment would be in cashiers check drawn from a local Banks. And
am offering additional $50 with the original price to have this

Name to be on the payment...........
Address to mail the check to.............
Cell phone # to contact you ................
Final Asking price...................

I will make arrangements for the pick up as soon as you have your check
clear, due to my work frame and my Kids, I will not be able to come with
the cash and pick it up myself , so my husband will mail the check and have
someone pick up the item after the check clear.,

What do you think; Legitimate or scam?

Never sold anything on craigs list before.

When they will pay more for the item it sounds like a scam. Have her give pick-up guy the check and he can cash it then bring cash.

Or accept the check and cash it at your bank and it clears where it came from

There have been people get robbed and shot doing deals via Craigs List when they meet up. Your call, but personally I'd rather meet up with a guy in a downtown Memphis alley selling genuine Rolex watches for $50. :wink: :shock:

Sounds like a scam and I'd say it's probably a scam. If you haven't already, go to craigslist and click on the "Avoid scams and fraud", over on the left. Good Luck.

If you are bringing them to your house don't do it ..in fact don't do it anyway ..Craigs List is a haven for not so nice people looking for easy opportunities.

On the positive side. Well our family has sold a lot of stuff on Craigs List. From cheap items to $4000 boat and a Jeep with no problems.
Just be carful and you will be OK

The grammar in their response is questionable and the additional $50.00 offer is bait to suck you in...that is my opinion and I wouldn’t trust it...they want your address so my guess is they are setting you up for a possible robbery/break in.

Don’t do it...that is my advice.

Thanks for the help and advice; I said I would not accept a cashiers check, that she should give the cash to the person picking up the horn and we would make the exchange at the local Police Department; Haven't gotten a response yet.

I do quite a bit of Craigslist buying and selling, this has red flags written all over it...I wouldn’t even reply.

Last summer we advertised a big flail mower for sale in MN. Person from Georgia would send friend to pick up. Check arrived signed by “Robert Mugabe”. Sold the mower to a local. Posted the check on the wall.

Since Craig's list is all about buying something cheap and often even bargaining the price down.... it is very likely these folks are crooks... I'd bet anything you could not get them to show up and give over their I.D. before making the payment.
