A shocking find

I have been attempting to contact my buddy and 'best man' for nearly three years and couldn't get in touch. Phone calls and messages and no replies. Tonight I stated a 'web search' and was looking at American Legion and AmVets sites. I found out why he wasn't answering his phone. He passed away three years ago. He stated prior to his passing that he wanted no formal ceremony, wished to be cremated, his ashes placed in a Jack Daniels bottle, and deposited in the Chesapeake Bay. We were not only friends but served together. He was with me the very first time I asked my present wife out. He said to me that night, and I quote him: "Don't screw this up Fox, ya got a good one here." He was right!

Till last year I worked a long stretch of nights with too much overtime (15 years 6 nights a week). Now that I am on days, I tried to reconnect with old friends everyone I try to find is dead, I stopped looking.

Sorry for the loss of your friend.

I told Linda that I am now starting to 'outlive' all my 'old hang-around' and 'drinkin' (when I did drink) buddies. It is said that only the good die young. If that is true I figure to be around till about 150 and shot by a jealous husband.

In my case most of my friends were 10 + years older than me, and time is taking its toll. For a while I was finding out every couple of weeks somebody was gone.

A good friend and riding buddy passed away last month. He was one of a kind. Joined the Marines lying about his age and was on the Okinawa invasion. He was a forward artillery spotter for the Navy bombardment prior to the main landing. He went ashore there on his seventeenth birthday. He later worked in the Lockheed Skunk works on the Blackbird project at Groom Lake. Quite a man, and a great friend. He rode his maxi scooter with me two days before he died. I really miss my father and the men of his generation. Most of the men I knew while growing up on Army Air Corps and USAF bases were WWII vets. Not so many of them left now.

I know how you feel. I lost touch with a college friend, ROTC buddy and shooting partner back in 1981, looked him up, found he passed away in 2002.

I had a similar experience. I had a good friend and shooting buddy that I hung out with pretty often until i got married. He was much older than me and we lost touch. You know how that goes. I drove past his house one day and there was a different family living there. Months maybe a year later on a Thursday night tried to track him down in earnest. Without any luck. A couple days later my Dad called to tell me that my friend Bob had died a few days earlier on Thursday!

I can sure related to this story!

I had been hunting for a childhood pal for 45 years... I found out a couple years ago that he was deceased, although I have no idea when or how. Phil was a wild child, so I can't say I'm surprised. But I was very sad to learn of his demise.

Adios Phil.... Sorry we never got to rehash old times my friend.

Best regards, Pete

When I came to Idaho to look for a house I got a call that my closest friend from high school had passed away a couple of days before.

Last year I was looking for an old buddy, really great guy, could build anything, found out he had died the year before. Lot of friends have died the last 5 years.

Sorry for your loss Fox Mike, may he RIP.

The one that bothers me the most is a good friend from years ago. I called him out if the blue last Christmas, he didn't sound good and was obviously failing health wise.

This spring I found out he died before Thanksgiving! I swear I talked to him at Christmas.

Either way, I'm glad I made that call, I hope I at least brightened his day a little.

On a side note, this week I had two co workers not show up to work, only to find out they both had died, separately. No details on either one.

Hi,

Over the years I've always had more friends older than myself than younger. The last few years, it's gotten to the point if someone's been "missing" from the group for a while, I'm almost afraid to ask about them. The answer's been the same way too many times.

My condolences to all of you who've experienced those same feelings...

Rick C
