Last summer my wife and I, celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary, took a Viking River cruise through Germany, Austria and Hungary. While there we had some excellent schwartzbier, or black beer. Schwartzbier is not the very strong and bitter bock beer, but is rich ans slightly sweet. Returning to the U.S.A. we have had mixed luck in finding some of the beers we enjoyed on our trip, but recently we discovered a Brazilian beer that is even better than the German beers it is modeled after. I almost hesitate to tell you the name because it is not easy to find here in the U.S., but I can't let myself be that selfish. The beer is Xingu, pronounced (I believe) "zing-oo". If you like beer, trust me, you will like this one if you can find some.

We have an excellent selection of craft beers here in Washington, but the closest I have come to my favorite German Bier, Andech's Dopple Bock Dunkle, is brewed by the Iron Horse Brewery in Ellensburg, Wa.. I do Like an English Brew; It's called:
BODINGTON ALE
it has a compressed "thingy" in it that carbonates the beer when you open it, pour it into a mug and get a really NOCE head on it even chilled. Of course one year when I was there in England visiting my friends, we were drinking "Old Speckled Hen" which wasn't bad at all.

Search high and low, but no other beer makes me smile like Guiness Stout. Our locally brewed Saranac products are mighty fine though....I tend to hate fruity beers but their pumpkin ale is outstanding.
(I wish we could establish an international beer drinkers battle plan to fire bomb Corona out of existence though....any beer so bad you have to add something to it to make it palatable...speaks for itself.).

I always try to stay with locally brewed beers. Fresher is always better. With that said, I was at a new local brewery here in St. Pete. the other night and they craft German style brews and at least to my taste, they were very good. Unfortunately they are very new and haven't even started bottling yet. And only a few bars are offering their draft beers so you have to go to brew house to get the beer, for now.

Alaskan Amber gone regional now a small brewery in Juneau. Boneyard, an IPA with lots of hops brewed in SE Oregon, Arrogant Bastard Ale, I thought it was brewed for me personally but they sell it to others too.

Last one I had that was an IPA beer caused me to come up with a new meaning..... It's Pretty Awful.

I really don't drink much beer (been a couple of years now); Did over in England with my friends during dinner and again when Ashley and I went over for a couple of weeks; "The Pub" at the motel where we stayed had Bodington's on Tap; DELICIOUS with Fish and Chips and a couple of other Traditional English dinners.

Try "Trappistes Rochefort 8"; it is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. That is a special occasion beer for me; I typically crack one open and sit on the back porch to sip when it is really cold out, around Christmas.
Otherwise, IPA is my beer of choice. Made by me of course. Brewed 10 gallons of a Brown Ale this morning.

Do you enjoy just watching Boddingtons react after poured in a glass? Such a cool way the head forms with bubbles going down as well as up. Never fails to fascinate me. Smaller molecules (N2 vs CO2) make smaller bubbles and creamy head.
Xingu beer is the one with the crocodilian on a diamond shaped label. Available local package stores. I will try the blonde version but will leave the black brew for you guys.

Boddingtons is a good beer. Took the kids down to Universal in Florida this past summer. Stood in line to catch the train back from Harry Porterville and they had a little "store" that sold beer right there in line. Bought 2 Boddingtons and did not mind the line at all.
