I have a 77/44 that is about 10 years old. Always shot good. Even killed deer at 120 yds. Yesterday I went to do some shooting to get ready for the deer season and it was shooting about 6 in low and 2 in right at 50 yards. No problem. Put it back in the vice, adjusted the elevation, started moving the windage and click click....nothing. It bottomed out. Best I could get the gun to shoot was 1.5" right at 50yds. The scope just wouldn't move anymore. Someone said I needed to send it back to Ruger to have the mounts reworked. Any suggestions? Anyone eve heard of an issue like this? Any input is recommended. Oh and the scope is a leupold vx-iii

given that there was only a couple clicks of windage, the scope to bore was pretty far off even when it was shooting good.

the amount of windage adjustment in the scope varies greatly (even in the Leupold VX-III series, from 40 to 120MOA)

the cause for the sudden change could be a loose ring or the scope being "Knocked" out of adjustment. the worst could be a damaged barrel.

I would verify the adjustment range of thes scope by clamping it down and measuring the cross hair travel accross the target. I would then set the cross hair in the center of travel, hopeflly the mechanical clicks agree with the optical. to check the optical center, roll the scope 180 degrees and verify some point on target.

then verify the rings or snug and fully engaged into the notches. there should be no gap between the rings and the reciever.

then with the scope at optical center, pull the bolt and looking trough barrel, center the barrel on a target about 20 yards away( I use a spent case with the primer removed to get a better alignment picture). the scope should be very near the same point on the target

what I would do is to get a set of Burris signature scope mounts IF they make them for the Ruger
what they provide are inserts with the scope mounts that you can adjust the heck out of your scope before you use any adjustments on the scope
the have a .005,.010 and .020 (I believe) that you use to get the scope close then fine tune

Turn the rings around and see if the problem goes to the other side. That will tell you if the problem is with the rings. :D
