77/357 Loads?

Anyone played with IMR-4227 powder and 158gr bullets in their 77/357 yet?

Has anyone had good luck with 4227 powder and 158gr jacketed bullets in any .357?

IMR4227 works well with 158s in my 20'' Rossi .357 Lever carbine. It also works well with 240 grainers in my 77/44.

What charge of 4227 were you using in your Rossi? What primer?

I only got good accuracy at starting loads in Lyman's manual.

I like 4227 for my Ruger GP 100 6" with 150 -158 gr bullets . For hunting Im using [max] 16 grs. :lol:

Always use a magnum primer with IMR 4227. Only way to get consistent results ... in my experience that is. I use CCI . That said I've not used it in .357 yet. All my experience is with .44Spec, .44Mag and .45 Colt and heavy bullets.

I used CCI-550 primers and Hornady's XTP 158 grainers. I did get consistent velocities though, but accuracy got worse and worse as I moved up in .5 gr increments from Hodgdon's starting load of 14.5gr. 14.5gr did a little better than 1.5" for two 5-shot shot groups at 50yds. Groups were a consistent 4" at 50yds by the time I got to Hodgdon's max of 16.0grs.

Speer's #14 manual now shows standard CCI-500 primers for both 2400 and 4227 loads. I thought about re-shooting those 4227 loads using Speer's data and their 158gr bullet just to see what happens.
