You could buy a Savage heavy barrel AND a Ruger American Predator for that amount and have two rifles that will likely out-shoot it.

That and the savage 11/111 are similar price. The savage includes an OK to 500m scope. I put a target scope on mine (cost 2x what the rifle did), so it's good to 1000m for competation. You will face a similar scope problem. The RPR is what you want or the savage 10 series targets and a good target scope. So if you are going to be serious as a competitor that is not the rifle to start with. You really need to plan on $1600 or more realistically $2000+ total cost even if you practice a lot. If you are really serious you will reload so add another ~$1000.
Don't mean to discourage but be realistic. If you just want to go out and lunch some paper at 500m the savage is a much better buy.

I would rather have a Ruger Hawkeye than a Savage heavy barrel and a Ruger American. In fact, this year I bought a Ruger Hawkeye FTW Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor. It might be the most accurate centerfire rifle I own. So if the OP wants this rifle for general target work, I think he will be happy with it.

Plus he will have a real rifle - 3-position safety, CRF, open trigger, rigid stock, etc.

I own a Hawkeye Predator 6.5 Creedmoor. It is much nicer that Savage or RAR Predators in every regard other than accuracy.

My next rifle is going to be a Weatherby Vanguard in 6.5 Creedmoor. The Howa 1500 and Weatherby Vanguard are some of the best kept secrets in rifles.

How serious are you about punching paper? What distances do you plan to shoot out to? 6.5 Creedmoor excels at long ranges. At shorter distances, you're probably wasting your money, as .308 will do just as well.

Amen to that. I have three rifles based on the Howa action...a 300 Wby Vanguard (a half-inch rifle), a custom stocked Model 1500 S&W in 30 06 (a half-inch rifle), and a recently completed 375 Ruger Howa 1500 (custom stocked in English walnut). I built the 375 for shooting cast bullets, and it is amazing.

I have a No. 1 in 6.5 Creedmoor and it shot well under an inch with the first (and only, so far) load.

I think a 1500 Howa in 6.5 Creedmoor would be awesome. This is a great cartridge.

it amazes me how many can't even spell creedmoor, but want to jump on the bandwagon anyway.....

Creedmoor is a word that, for some reason, I frequently spell incorrectly (even though I own one). Thanks for pointing that out, and I corrected my post above.

Now, about that capitalization...

Lets take the word Creedmoor and what is it. (Short version)It was named after the land owner Mr. Creed who sold it for a long range rifle rifle. Moor is a name for open land or wasteland or peaty land. So, someone named the range Creedmoor. I got that from a friend who lived nearby it for years. I have purchased lots of stuff from Creedmoor sports for competition rifle shooting and know of the Creedmoor rifle match but, until a few years ago never had information how the name came about until my buddy from NY told me.

First two groups I fired with the Speer 140 gr JSP and 39.5 gr of 4350 went into 0.701 and 0.978 inches. Yeah, I'm a believer. Haven't done any other load development work with it yet.

Oh, and about that business of Ruger not providing nice wood on their No. 1s any more...
