I'm with you I would buy one! Seems that Ruger scraped the 480 projects IIRC they had extraction problems. That said I believe it would be a good seller. ps
 
Per a conversation I had with a couple Ruger folks a yr or so ago, The .480 is "dead".


IMO, it was a good idea at the wrong time. It simply got completely overshadowed by the .460 and .500 cartridges from S&W. In a market where everyone thinks they just have to have the biggest and baddest the subtle .480 just kinda got glanced at from the stampede to those. Too bad.
 
I have 2 480`s and there awesome! A lot of power with out the wrist breaking recoil....not to mention very accurate too.
Its a shame it never caught on. Glad I got two and reloading dies for it also.
 
I think now is the time for Ruger to bring back the 480. Smith is going to limited production on the 460 and 500 possible going to be a performance center only gun. Or they may go to only doing a production run if they get enough orders. Ruger does the 480 as a stock item now I can only see sales being much better. Do a super blackhawk and sales would be great. Look at what happened when Ruger finally gave us a 44 special.
 
I personally would love to see a Blackhawk in 480 Ruger. I might just buy one. I think Ruger needs to bring back the 480 Ruger in at least one or two revolvers. The problem is that the 454 Casull seems to capture most potential buyer's interest if they are leaning "Ruger" big bore.
 
Hmmm...there's reason production lessens - sales! Hence the "if they get enough orders. ;) That doesn't necessarily equate to the .480 being a commodity at this point.
Besides, if such a creature as a .480 Bh is such a must-have, there's 'smiths that'll make 'em for ya.
 
I had my 454 out this week in the 15 degree weather for a range session. The cold weather plus the rubber grips wearied me after about two cylinders. My shooting was way off and I was frustrated. It made me really consider another big bore without the wrist breaking recoil. I love tossing heavy lead downrange but not at the expense of it hitting it's intended target. From what I have heard of the 480, I'm very intrigued. A SA in that caliber, reasonably priced, would get to the front of my short list real quick.

The point I am driving at is the 480's competition is not going to be readily available. The 480 could definitely fill the need for a bigbore handgun without breaking the bank or waiting who knows how long for a production run. As for a smith making you a 480 the cost is very high. Again look at the 44 special a smith could make you one of those too. Ruger makes it and it goes from a special run to a catalog item in under a year.

The 480 needs to be actively marketed and offered in the configuration we want and it would be a winner. Give us the Alaskan back and a Super Blackhawk and the 480 will be alive and well.
 
The 480 Ruger would be great as a packing SA....4 4/8 barrel ..BH ...
It takes everything great about thr 45 Colt and bumps it up a level ..
Most guys that own 454 Cas... shoot 45 Colts or handloads 454 to lower pressures ...the 480 operates at lower than 454 pressures ..spits out big ole .475 heavy bullets ....thats impressive ..a 45 colt grown out...instead of pressured up...like the 454 ...Less pressure less problems.....less stress on the gun and operater

to me it is a win win ...for Ruger
 
Put the .480 in a Bisley and count me in. Personally, I wonder just how many 454s, 460s and 500s ever see field use? I would be willing to bet a small percentage.
 
The Blackhawk with 45 colts and 44 Mags. with those wooden grips or those new hard plastic ones are not a joy to shoot with full house loads....
Thats why the 44 Spec. are selling like hotcakes..alot Super Blackhawk shooters have used loaded down 44 mag. or 44 specials..just as alot of BH 45 Colt shooter apt for the lighter loaded or cowboy loads for shooting ..useing full house loads sparingly at the range ,and stokeing for the field
 
I have seen several people buy 500s at my LGS. I doubt more than a box of shells goes through most 500s and I doubt many ever leave the safe by the looks of some of the goofs buying them. My favorite was the guy who bought two and two shoulder holsters a right hand and a left hand so he could carry both at the same time.These were the 8" barreled versions. He also purchased one box of ammo.It was one those maybe gun control is a good idea moments.
 
Don’t let others confuse you on the 45 Colt. Most dedicated handgun hunters don't jack up light bullet loads and pound the gun and themselves to death needlessly, try 340 grain w/18.0 grains of 2400. This will shoot end to end of a whitetail at 100 yards, low pressure and fairly low recoil, but devastating power!! As for the 480 Blackhawk, I now there is a Distributor trying to get Ruger to supply them, Ruger has already built one on a 5 shot Bisley platform, I would love a 5 1/2" Stainless model, mater of fact if they don't get off the pot soon and work with the Distributor that is wanting this, I will have one converted! The distributor told me the problem is they are to busy selling cheap plastic junk that cost little to build, and selling faster than they can mold it?? Mainly cause the buying public isn't letting Ruger themselves know what they want, and if you guy's don't contact Ruger why would they build something new when there getting hounded for plastic pop guns!! And making big money doing it?????
 
Unfortunately I think the only things Ruger is interested in producing right now is the LCR LCP SR9 and SR40. Us big bore revolver fans are just going to have to cool our jets!!

Hamilton Bowen does many conversions to larger bores. You really have to want the work done, and often the cost exceeds the original selling price of the firearm.
 
Many people don't want to spend the money for a custom revolver such as you might get Bowen to build.

I believe Taurus stopped making their Raging Bull in 480 Ruger. So the options now are Freedom Arms and the BFR's. I have been itching for a BFR in 475 Linebaugh/480 Ruger. That is the route Ruger should go with a 5-shot cylinder. All of a sudden, they have something for the hard core big bore fans that is in the 500 S&W mag power realm which should keep folks happy and primarily the folks who just want a "big one" and most likely will shoot it very little anyway.
 
Yup, would like a SBH, in .480. Would like either the long Dragoon grip,minus the square back trigger guard, or a Bisley. steve b
 
That 'Freedom Arms' in 475 Linebaugh/480 Ruger would be quite a hum-dinger!
That's the route Ruger should go. :)
 
There is a nice 480/ 475 made. Stainless, 5 shot, free spin pawl, flattop, longer SBH grip but without the square trigger guard...

Magnum research BFR

I'd still buy a ruger if they came out with one in the regular grip and the 4 5/8 inch barrel in blue.
