Will a 1971 area Ruger Blackhawk Convertible 7 1/2 inch barreled 45LC/45ACP safely shoot 45 SUPER ammo thru the 45ACP Cylinder. I don`t know any thing about a 45 Super, and really I have never even seen any 45 Super ammo. And while I am asking I don`t know any thing about, or have I seen a 45 Magnum cartridge either. Could any body kindly bring this outdated Old Guy up to date on both of these two rounds. Thanks in advance.

YES it can.....IF the 45SUPER is loaded to a MAP of 32.000PSI OR LESS.
NO it cannot shoot the 45WM as the latter cartridge is of 'magnum ' chamber length.
YES...you could have the 45ACP cylinger rechambered to 45WM...but why bother.
YOU are now a candidate for a fresh new copy of CARTRIDGES OF THE WORLD.
And so it goes...

Do a search online about 45 Super. There's quite a but of info out there. Wil touches on a very good point: it depends on who loaded the ammo and to what pressure level.

There is no SAAMI set pressure level associated with 45 Super, but 28,000 CUP (psi?) was what developer Dean Grennel worked up. Real Guns and some others have load data online.

But some people load above 28k, on up to 36k - 40k like the 460 Rowland.

Starline makes special heat treated cases for the Super. If you choose to load for it, let me know and I can sell you a few new Starline cases to get you started.

A couple places made/make ammo for the Super, but it's a lot harder to find now. I have some squirreled away somewhere. IIRC, it pushes a 230 grain jhp to about 1100-1150 fps.

Will & Doug: Thanks for your information. The reason why I was asking about the 45 Super. Is because I was just asked by a close friend whether I could shoot the 45 Super in my Ruger Blackhawk 45LC/45ACP using my 45ACP Cylinder. And I didn't know one way or the other. I had just never seen or heard of it done. I have no real desire to shoot any hot 45 ACP loads thru my Old Ruger Blackhawk and doubt I ever would. As Far as the 45 Magnum goes, I saw a very large 1911 that looked like it was on Steroids in a lgs in Thornton Co back in the late 1980`s if I remember right. And I was told by the lgs owner that the gun was called a Grizzly and it was chambered in 45 Magnum. And he also said the 45 Magnum case was much longer that a standard 45 ACP case. But I have never seen any 45 Magnum ammunition. Are the guns that shoot both of these rounds custom made guns. Again thanks for your information.

You can shoot 45 Super in a standard 1911 pistol with but a spring change and has been said can shoot in a Ruger revolver ACP cylinder.

"Could" is a dangerous word. I just read an article discussing how to load the 45 auto up to 460 Rowland levels in Ruger 45 Revolvers.

I guess is possible, and plausible, but don't know that it's that smart, or a good reason to do it. If you need to, then let's go down that road, or if you really want to...

But if you're being pushed into it, that's the best reason to walk away.

Groo here
The 45 super is one of the rounds developed to make a 1911 into a hunting gun.[ also the 451 detonic and the 45-08]
they are all based on the 45acp oal of case and cartridge,
The difference is the brass, thicker at the base to hold the pressure in a 1911 standard barrel without a ramp.
A revolver does not have this limitation , being fully supported.[aka steel all the way around.]
I believe either corbon ,boubletap , or BB stated that a S&W m25 revolver was used to test their 45 super loadings.
