45 convertible question

I asked this once before and can't seem to locate the thread or replies so I'll hope you will indulge me one more time...I have a Blackhawk in 45 Colt that is in new condition. I'd like to be able to take advantage of shooting 45 ACP as well even though I load for the Colt caliber...I contacted Ruger about getting a 45ACP cylinder fitted and they said that since my gun was shipped as a 45 Colt only that they wouldn't make it into a convertible....I know that folks do add cylinders to these and the 357/9mm but as I recall it's more than just buying a cylinder and putting it in...please advise and if it's not worth it I may just buy a 45/45 convertible...I have a new 357/9 to match it up with...many thanks

If you find an ACP cylinder, it may work. Depends on how it fits your gun (alignment and end-shake being the concern). If you can find one cheap it's worth a shot.

that's odd as there have been many that have posted here that have sent there guns to have them fitted with a .45 acp cylinder. You may want to call back and get another answer

I'll do that....when I called the gal I spoke with asked for the serial # and checked the records and said that the gun had shipped as a 45 Colt revolver only and Ruger doesn't retrofit any guns to convertibles any more...

That's correct, if it didn't leave the factory with two cylinders you're SOL trying to get them to fit one to it now.
Measure your current cylinders OA, ratchet and front boss lengths and post those measurements in the classifieds, someone is bound to come up with a cylinder that will work for you.

FWIW, my kid brother had a 45 Colt BH ~ non-Convertible, that shot so-so. I found a cylinder in 45 ACP on a table at a Richmond, VA show priced cheaply enough it was worth taking a risk. We put it in and it shoots a lot better than the original. Was he just lucky? Who knows? But it turned out to be worth the chance once anyway. As with all things, YMMV! :wink:
