Im planning on buying a Hawkeye Tactical in january. Should I buy bunch of sierra 168gr hp-b or buy a range of bullets to experiment with. Any suggestions would be great so I don't waste abunch of money on bullets I dnt use.

I wouldn't buy a bunch of any until you know they shoot. I personally have always had good luck with Nosler Ballistic Tips in my Rugers.

I would stick to the 150-168 range of bullets though. Any heavier and you start to crowd vital powder space in the 308 case, any lighter and you give up downrange performance. If you're only going to be shooting targets under 300 yards you can go down to 125 grain bullets.

I have a favorite bullet sierra makes their # is 2140 its the .308 165 gr bthp gameking bullet. It's just as accurate as their matchking bullets in my rifle's . I use this bullet for all my 30 caliber guns from 308 to 300ultra mag. This is a great hunting bullet and also a tight grouping bullet. It's the only 30 caliber bullet I buy. Give it a try .

for my old XP100 IMHSA 308 I used 150 RNL with great accuracy out to 200 yards.

I have some left over that I will be loading for my M77 International.

I have a sprinkling of 150-168 in various tips.

It makes sense to get a good sample base before loading up a large amount of something less suitable, and even econo bullets can give spectacular target performance. There's no point in using such as the Noble & Expensive Nosler Partition etc for load development.

Since it will be a new gun and you are buying for mostly target shooting, I would buy one box of Federal Premium with the 168 grain sierra match bullets. Shoot these and see how they do. If they shoot good I would buy some of the sierra's and go from there. If not I would buy a box Federals with Ballistic tips and try them. This will give you brass and an idea of what to expect.

I wouldn't buy any hollow points(they "blow up" on impact with anything-twigs etc) unless you are afraid of riccochets. They are a varmint hunting bullet and do not do well on deer(at least when I used them) IMHO. I'd buy soft points personally for the added penetration, and controlled expansion.

Great choice and I've been using it for years and with great results on game.

You can buy sample packs of various bullets to try here. So far Barnes, Nosler and Berger.

Yep, those are very accurate bullets, much moreso than you'd think from just looking at one.

My model 77 loves the 168 gr matchking in the Federal Premium target load...one raggedy hole at 100.. not much of a deer bullet, but very accurate..

Yeah on that.
If ya gots a .308 rifle with a 1-10 twist that won't group with Federal Match ammo, ya gots a rifle that needs some sort of mechanical attention.

The 2140 sierra bullets are my favorite and about the only .308 cal bullet I use besides the 30 carbine and 30-30's. I have killed probably 30 deer using this bullet with great results. As far as accuracy the last 5 deer I killed with my 308 were all head shots. Whereever you put the x that's where the bullet goes. It seems like most people who have tried them have the same opinion except gramps. He needs to buy a box of them and give them a try. He would be a convert I bet you.
