I've reported it to American Honda and have a case number. They say no recall/etc on record.

Yikes! That does not sound like a good situation. I hope they come up with a solution.

Rack & pinion steering? If so when was it last properly serviced?

From OP’s post on Carproblemzoo, one of many about the same steering issue:

“. Currently my vehicle has 16k miles on it. ”

A quick check of the Honda motor maintenance schedule shows the only recommendation WRT the steering gear is a visual inspection every 7500 miles if used in severe service conditions.

This vehicle uses some kind of electronic power steering that seems to be somewhat problematic.

As an aside, one of the most unreliable vehicles I ever owned was a new 2006 Honda Element that had to be towed back to the dealership 150 miles away three times in the first 6 months I owned it. And Honda didn’t want to pay for the tow bill. No more Hondas for me.

Honda knows about the problem but has not made it public. Look at the short video and comments;it's less than two minutes.

Thanks for the replies. Honda is as bad as the rest of them,it seems.

I'll bet Honda does not make the steering rack but gets it from some source, maybe even China (not that all stuff from there is faulty or inferior).

I have an 05 VW Jetta that sometimes does not want to turn left....
makes things slightly difficult...
I couldn't find anybody that knew what to do but replace the electric controlled rack.....
So I did the unthinkable and removed the battery cables to short them together....
Well it reset everything and worked great for a while so I just keep a 10mm wrench in the door pocket for a fast reset......YMMV
