Last year I shelled out $1200 for C/B special #1A in 7x57, lovely rifle, but haven't shot it yet. I called Ruger and asked why the 1A in 7x57 is no longer listed on their web page catalog. The nice lady told me the C/B specials in 7x57 were the last 1As in 7x57 to be made. Only the 1A International will be made in 7x57. I hope that Ruger will continue to offer the 1A in 7x57, its such a perfect combination. Sadly Ruger seems to be discontinuing some of their best rifle / cartridge combinations.

I think they need to make what sells. Great cartridges like the 7x57 don't sell as well as the big boomers. Someday as the cost of ammo and components rises out of site and everybody has deformed shoulders and loss of hearing we will regain our composure and the best of the best cartridge guns will come back. why the romance with the 7 x57? Never shot one, but know they are a 'cult' gun. I think a 30-06 covers the same ground and ammo is everywhere. Can't say that for 7 x 57.

I'd like to see them chamber the 1A in some more chamberings, like .7mm-08Rem, .260Rem, .280Rem, .358Win, .308Win, .257Rob, .250Sav, .284Win, .35Whelen, .338-06, .223Rem, .222Rem, and 6mmRem.

Amen to that Hawkeye! I don't see anything wrong with the occassional special edition limited run of "African calibers", but I think Ruger's main production should be classic American and European calibers for a classic rifle like the #1. I would be willing to bet some money that sales of the number one would go up.

I doubt that the 7 Mauser left the "A" line-up for lack of sales. That one actually seemed to be favored above most by those who talk about such rifles. FWIW, I just had mine out today and tried a freshly opened can of H450 with a freshly opened box of Sierra 170 RN Pro-Hunters. (Both of those are obsolete now for those who don't know.) 49.0 Grains appears to be quite the combination. My rifle shows promise on the targets from the bags; one group looks pretty decent, the next lousy. But shooting from more usual field positions is showing a much more consistent result, time after time. It may be time to get this one bloody.

I have one of those Whelen's and love it. Have only shot factory ammo through it so far and with 200 gr Rem PSPs, I was able to shoot a 1.25" group at 100. Cannot wait to see what handloads will do.

Glad I got my 7x57 #1a when I did. Couple of years ago. Best piece of wood I've seen on any #1. Got lucky there. First time I went to the range, shot a 3 shot group. Couldn't find bullet holes 2 & 3 in the spotting scope. Figured they went off the target until I walked down there only to see that they all went in the same hole. 139 gr Hornady SP. Got real lucky again. It pretty much maintains POI.

Maybe not. The .35 Whelen Hawkeye I bought in '08 cost the same as those in standard cals. Those were a 'limited run'.

Until last week, I have never fired the 7X57 round. When I started shopping for an RSI, I was given only three options for a chambering and the 7 Mauser was not known to me. So, I started researching the round and was very pleased with the history and reputation of the round that for some reason had escaped my attention for the past 30 years of gun ownership. I think that people focus on specific interests and vast areas of information is not explored. When I searched the 7X57 caliber I was hit with a large amount of interesting information that has sparked my interest and sent me into new directions. This round has the least recoil but still performs very well as a hunting round. I can still find ammunition for it at my local stores but not as much as I could had I selected a more traditional or shall I say popular chambering. I would buy a Hawkeye or standard No. 1 in this caliber if it was offered. It's got history and performance. I think that Ruger will do what the market demands. CZ offers rifles in this chambering and I will let the market guide me to them if need be.
