180gr JHC .44mag.....

picked up some .40 brass from someone (for free) and if that ain't enough he goes and tosses in some 180gr JHC for .44mag. :shock: i have never loaded 180gr so after looking around i settled in on 21gr of 2400 for starters........

I, just week before last, tried 2400 behind some 180's and got miserable results from an 1894...however, W296 brought them on target like I wanted.

I like 2400 in my revolvers, guess that is why I tried it in the rifle...maybe your results with 2400 and the 180's in a revolver will work well.

most accurate load in my Ruger 44 Carbine is some 35 year old 180 Sierra hp bullets behind a case full of H110...go figure. They were very accurate in an OM SBH I had then but not sure what powder I was using, maybe 2400...goodluck

i have a 9'' SRH and a 96/44 so we will see what happens when i take the kid out in the desert for x-mas break.....worst case scenario is they all go boom and dirt flies on the side of the mountain.

I started out with 26.3gr of 2400 behind the 180gr Sierra JHC some 24 years ago in the 7 1/2" 44mag and had great results as to accuracy. I never recovered a bullet from deer killed with it, all of them passed through.
I couldn't get the same bullet to expand in the 3" 44spl behind a load of Unique but the 180gr Hornady HPXTP would. At some point I migrated to the XTP's in both and lowered the charge to 24.5gr of 2400 in the magnum.
Some people do want complete pass throughs, I still like the idea of complete energy transfer and sticking in the opposite side of the body cavity.
