10/22 won't manually eject live rounds

This is a mid 70's 10/22. It extracts and ejects spent brass just fine when firing but if I want to unload, I drop the mag. and work the bolt, it won't eject the round. The extractor pulls the round out of the barrel but it doesn't let go.
Any ideas?

You can either replace the extractor with one of the aftermarket units, which are made with more "hook" angle on them, and do a much better job.

OR...

If you're handy and cheap (like me), you can remove the factory extractor and file more of an undercut on the hook yourself.

I've done both and both work equally well.

sounds like the extractor is holding on just fine, and the ejector needs to be looked at...........
that's part number B-8 and is mounted in the trigger group.

and yes as Snake noted usually you must give the bolt a good pull back, just like it would be actually firing.

There are two ejectors in the 10-22. The first is built into the magazine and is the large projection that sticks out first from the back of the magazine. The second is the one in the trigger group. This one is there to kick the cartridge out of the action when the magazine is removed.

If the ejector is still in the trigger group and not damaged do like Snake45 said, yank harder!

P32 is exactly correct. I posted incorrectly, thinking the complaint was about poor extraction (another common 10/22 malady) when the OP was asking about ejection.

The 10/22's primary ejector is built into the magazine, as he says. The one built into the gun doesn't work as vigorously.

And this is one of the very, very few times on this board when Jimbo is actually right about something: Harder and faster! :P

Come on Snake. I'm batting at least 500% including the political section. You just don't want to admit it. :D

Batting 500%? You hit five balls for every swing?

I assume you meant .500 or 50%. You actually bat a lot higher than that in every section but the political section. There, you bat about .0005%.

Crap, I see my average just took another hit. (.500 and falling)
