10/22 Bolt Release

I few years back I ordered a hammer, spring and sear kit by Volquartsen and I think at the same time I ordered a modified bolt release...

Later on I got another 10/22 and started fixing it up... but somewhere I missed on the bolt release... when I went to an Appleseed with this 2nd 10/22 the dern factory bolt release just about drove me crazy... same on my Charger.

Today I was cleaning and working on my 10/22's and the Charger and decided to see what needed to be done to fix them... I compared the two and figured out with the right small files you could just file the factory one down to make it work like the better one....

The factory one I have to fight with pushing and wiggling to get the bolt to release... the Voquartsen one you just pull the bolt back and let her go and she slams forward. Here's a picture showing the fix.

the only thing I did to mine was remove the "heart" shape from the hole. Works great now.

I started with the picture in a book on 10/22s that is somewhere on this sight.. the Iowegan book... that one just shows about half the tip kind of taken off that hole... bottom left hole in picture above.... but it still would not work... So, I took it back out and did the upper right part which makes it kind of match the Voquartsen... put it back in and it still did not work... so I then took more off the first hole and it worked. I think you are right RoyP in that the bottom left hole might be all you need to remove, but with mine I had to get it down a pretty good ways.

the other good part is I can just about take these trigger groups apart and put them back together with my eyes closed.

I just did like Roy did and took the spikey part out of the heart shaped hole. You have to make sure that part is rounded a bit and not flat across though. I just followed the directions someone posted on rimfirecentral a few years ago.

The trigger groups are actually fairly easy to take a part and reassemble once you get over the fear of messing something up and do it a couple times. Hardest part is the trigger/sear part.

It helps if you have the exploded view of the trigger group to figure out how that little spring on the side of the hammer goes.

I changed the spring and hammer on this 10/22 with a mystery one I had in my stash (I think these are the ones I couldn't get to work safely in my Charger with the plastic trigger group housing) it's got what I consider a hair trigger now... but once I figured out how light it is... I did the test on it...

cocked it... kept safety off and then beat on it and slapped it around for a while to see if the hammer would slip.

I think the parts I filed off on the upper right of the picture allow for the part to float better.... letting it fall easier away from the bolt.

In the picture above the part is actually upside down as to how it goes in the trigger group and the arm on the lower right is the part that holds the bolt back... with the modified one, when you pull the bolt back a second time this arm just falls down... with the factory part you have to jiggle the little tab behind the mag release a couple times to get it to fall.

Just did this mod and am very pleased that I now don't have to 'fiddle' with the 'under gun' release. The only part I filed away was the pointy part of the release. File, check, file, check, till it functioned OK.

The key is as you remove the point to make that edge of the hole a bit round, and not just flat. With it rounded and smooth, it will not catch on the cross-pin.
