I have a Hawkeye Scout Rifle, the 16 inch synthetic stock mag feed version, but I'm a bit disappointed that the rear iron sight bolted on to the aft dovetail. Couldn't Ruger have added a solid rear sight that wouldn't need removal to mount a conventional scope on the dovetails? Otherwise its about the best .308 carbine on the market in my opinion. What's your take?

With a scout scope or a red dot mounted forward of the sight, no problem leaving it. I can only assume that they figured most wouldn't mount a convention scope. Guess like everything, it's a compromise.
Mid weight Stainless barrel, pillard bedding, controlled round feed with the positive extraction of the Mauser claw, removable mag, under seven pounds, with fixed sights and the ability to use the scout mount or a conventional mounting based on user needs. Just how much more would it raise the price point to be able to use the existing conventional mount? PS: without QD ring mounts how long does it take to unscrew all those bolts with an allen key?

Why are you removing the scope? If you are really worried about, get peep through rings.
The new versions (on the American Gen II) all have a rail that allows either mounting method.
Just wondering if a peep sight made by Skinner might be able to replace the Ruger rear sight. Drill/tap or screw on 1 of their $15 sights.
Maybe a strap-on cheek rest with a storage pouch. If using a traditional scope store sight in pouch. If removing scope, just pull the sight out and install.
That sounds better than leaving the rear sight in the gun case. Although I have not found it nessary to add a cheek riser to the comb of the stock for conventional scope mounting.
As good as current scopes are, they still don't handle drops and falls well. A Dysfunctional scope won't end a stalk if you flip two levers and have the Irons. Guess it's more of a belt and suspenders thing, for Old FUDDS like me that occasionally hunt Dangerous game. Instant removal of the glass can be extremely useful if the game goes into serious thickets. Kind of one of the benefits of a 16 inch barrel. JMHO YMMV.
I have a stock pouch on my Scout that keeps the rear sight with the screw taped in it's hole, a fluorescent painted allen key, along with a 50 cent piece that's perfect for removing my conventionally mounted scope, plus a spare & loaded 5 round mag.
Besides the dinky peep, another thing that has me rolling my eyes is the winged front sight. The purpose of the wings are to protect the sight blade & these were added with good intensions I guess,,,, but they sort of missed the mark as the sight blade is taller than the wings, LOL.

Take a look at the sights from New England Custom Guns (NECG)
They mount on the receiver just like the factory rings.
A bit pricey but worth every penny, mine is mounted on my 35 Whelen

Yeah! NECG. They haven't stocked to one with the Williams/Lyman type aperture for over 3 years. Have even signed up to be notified when they make some. Would gladly pay the tariff for one of those. I have a Williams on an old Rem. 22 that has the brass ring around the aperture & my eye is quickly drawn to it.

It's a Scout rifle. Who buys a Scout rifle and then complains that it doesn't accommodate a conventional scope mounted on the receiver AND a receiver sight. Show me a single rifle on the market that does that.

You can purchase the XS Sights gunsite scout rail made for this model that includes a longer rail and includes a rear aperture sight so that you can mount a traditional scope..
