Maybe a previous owner glued the grips on?
That's about the only reason I can see for making the special hammer pin retainer, drilling and tapping the frame, and making a special cutout in the left grip.
I don't think Lipsey's would ever order a pistol like this one.

These are the only two 4" barrel MKII Lipsey's models that I am aware of.
I looked again after I posted. I still think tgey are Herretts, but maybe modified from a ???? High Standard?
I think that looks like an (out of production) Volquartsen compensator.
The front sight is obvious. What is the silver piece behind it, that's standing proud of the compensator? Is that the set screw that normally goes into the threaded hole for the front sight?

Yeah it looks like the screw threads down in the front sight hole. I hadn’t took it apart yet to see.
Probably will tomorrow.

I'll admit that those grips look a bit ugly. But if you are considering parting with them cheaply enough,,, I'd seriously consider giving them a try-out.
Back in the late 1970's,, I handled a MKI that someone had made a similar looking set of grips for. Never did know who made them. I tried to buy the gun,, but the owner refused. But those grips fit my hand like a glove,, & I've wished for a set like that since.

I’m going to take them off tonight and check them out, and hope there’s no rust underneath.
That is a MK4B and would have had a set of cocobolo or rosewood grips on it. Any style grips for a Mark 2 will fit it. The tab in front of the safety isn't original. Do you know what it's for? In the original configuration it's one of the handiest pistols that Ruger ever made.

That looks like some sort of a set up for NRA Precision or Internation Bullseye shooting. The grip lets you have the exact same hold everytime you handle the gun and when fired you don't have to move/change your grip at all. Handy for timed fire competitions.

The grips remind me, back in the 1980's I would routinely go to the Des Moines Fairgrounds gun show and Tom Volquartsen would have a table there. I took my 5.5 inch heavy barreled MKII Target pistol to him for an action job. They had a set of their laminated wood target stocks that I thought was really neat so I bought them. They didn't have an actual thumbrest but they had a swell on both sides that served as a thumbrest and would work for both right and left handed shooters. Well, after using them I didn't care for the large magazine well that came down below the bottom of the magazine so I got to work with a sander and removed the magazine well and a lot of the bulk on the bottom of the grips and they now are the most comfortable grips I have used on a MKII Ruger. I will throw up a picture after while just for fun.

Get a set of Houges or Pachmeyers. Best grips made. Every shooter I have has them. I'll swap you a set of Houges for your. I've got some older target pistols I'm trying to make period correct.
The grips remind me of a Browning Challenger.

Yours is a MKIVBL. Looks like a good pistol. His is a Mark 2
That piece is to keep the hammer pin in place , the grips didn’t cover it like the stock grips .They drilled and tapped it.

Here's all the variations of the 4B guns that I know of. Two Lipseys. A Davidsons and a Ruger. The plain Ruger is actually fairly scarce. Not as scarce as the KMK4BL.
