As my collection has grown I worry more and more about the potential loss. I am considering buying protection policy from NRA. Any body have experience with this group? Is it honest protection or just a ripoff. Can’t say I really trust the NRA. Thanks for any insight.

Personally, I don't trust any insurance. I do have health ins. (and it has been worth the exorbitant expense at my old age); also have home insurance; although now, they tell you that they no longer pay in a lump sum, but rather to the various contractors AS THE REBUILDING occurs. I did have classic car insurance for one car, BUT if you read the fine print, it's up to "you/me" to prove the true value "at time of loss". Fortunately, I never had to test that protocol; but I did send an ANNUAL appraisal and photographs to the insurance company. It would be interesting to hear from others who may have tested the system.... :-)

I've been paying this Lockton agency for years that is sponsored by the NRA and to be perfectly honest I have not got a clue as to how good they are and hope to never find out. I will warn you that if you go and pay them online they get a substantial amount more (at least by my standards) from you. My little piddly insurance policy is $355 a year and they wanted an addition $11 to pay on line. I chose to use a stamp and send a check. Oh, but keep in mind your $1,000 deductible (I think that is how much mine is) is actually covered by your NRA membership.

Long ago,, I had to use the NRA member firearm insurance. It was a smooth & well handled event. Police report, documentation, and I got a check.

I also have added additional insurance via the NRA & haven't had the need to question them. One thing I do like is that you do not have to submit a "list" of your firearms for them to be insured,, UNLESS an individual firearm exceeds $10,000.00.
But a scheduled list, kept up to date with details is very important to be able to provide the police & insurance company with any loss.
Plenty of details,, and especially photographs is an easy way to prove what you have.

If you have Lockton, the amount is any gun over $2,500. I had used them for years, never filed a claim. Then got a gun and was over $2,500. So I filled out the information, and they want to insure that one for over $100 more. Screw that. Changed companies, same amount and more than $100 less.

Mind sharing who you went with?

Inquiring minds want to know!

I use these guys: https://collectinsure.com/

Easy, inexpensive, and no clue how they are with claims (knock on wood, thank God, salt over the shoulder, and all those other good luck charms).

<edit> They were substantially cheaper than adding a rider to my homeowners.

My personal rule of thumb in such matters is "when in doubt, don't".

I use what used to be Eastern Insurance, now called Gallagher. 250 deductible. Covers guns, ammo, and reloading equipment. 300/yr.
I do not send them any type of inventory list or appraisal.
Apparently I have some extended coverage on my homeowners with State Farm but I don't trust it.
Years ago there was a shop fire on my parent's property. I filled out an inventory list the best I could remember and valued everything the best I could. As far as I know there was no argument and she got a series of checks. But that was probably 15 years ago or more and now they would probably try to get out of it.
