I have read, and up ontil a short time ago agreed, that it was the printing press. I have since changed my mind. The greatest invention is the "mute" button on the TV remote. I can punch that and immediately shut up Joe Namath.

My wife would disagree, she points that thing at me all the time and presses the mute button when I'm yelling at the TV and it doesn't work

And:
~ All of the "Ambulance chasers r us" attorney adds
~ MORONIC emu adds
~ Stupid kid in a cell phone ad.
~ Idiot that is driving around with one person in his vehicle, selling insurance,
that changes the other person from second to second
~ PLETHORA of other "if you have Medicare" add's
- - - - and the worst - -
~ Ding-a-ling standing there in her green suit,
almost screaming at you about insurance.

I second the mute as current "most important" invention.

I found the most effective and cheapest 'mute' button you can buy.
I cancelled cable tv. The silence is magnificent.

When you change the channel to get away from a commercial and the same commercial is on the new channel it is time to hit the 'off' button. :D

I don't have this problem. I watch almost no live TV. I record everything and Fast Forward through the ads. I can watch 2 hours of TV in under 90 minutes.

Since the topic is "inventions" then all your post did was add 1 to your post count. It appears that whenever the term TV arises you feel the need to remind us, for the umpteenth time, that you don't have a TV. Be advised repetition is no longer required. We are ALL aware.

Gosh Frank, you forget some of us have short term memory loss. :D :D I wouldn't know your name was Frank if I didn't see it in your signature line.

Wouldn't it be nice if it would work on your wife.

I'll add that NOT just cable has advertisements. . .

Greatest invention of all time has to be air conditioning! Although anything that will shut Joe Namouth up has got to be in the running!

I think that kid in cell phone costume is funny on vibrate and jumps in rice.

No TV at home for 26 years. Found out a long time ago that books make for better memories, and all that time wasted in front of the idiot box is better spent elsewhere.

"When you change the channel to get away from a commercial and the same commercial is on the new channel it is time to hit the 'off' button."

It's like coordinated commercial time. I skip from one geezer oriented channel to another and the same commercial is on both at the same time. Just think of all the exercise one would get w/o the remote.

I'm not sure if it would be the wheel or condoms.
Beer was already mentioned.

Uhhhhh......I vote for the flush toilet as the greatest invention.

As an aside, I used to work with a guy who told the story about someone in eastern Iowa that built a new brick house back in the day that had an indoor toilet. His Grandma used to say "what kind of man would want to sheet in the house".

Well, if somebody hadn't invented gun powder, what would we all be shooting today....?

I vote for GUNPOWDER.... who DID invent it anyway..???

Quite obviously somebody who did not have a TV or a computer either.

I put a/c right near the top of the list. I lived in South Texas for years and before a/c only masochists and Mexicans could stand the heat. Flush toilets have to be pretty high on the list as well making life tolerable.

As to TV, I watch a lot and enjoy it. One of the nicer inventions is something I find pretty much only on CBS shows that I recorded on the DVR. Its called "smart Resume" so when a commercial starts I hit the fast forward button and it stops by itself when the commercials are done and the show is resuming. Makes it a lot easier than having to watch closely to not go too far forward. But for some reason it is a feature that seems to only work for shows on CBS like "Blue Bloods" that I watch regularly. Most of my TV watching is on Netflix and Prime Video. Say what you want, but those services have been a lifesaver during this pandemic. I find I just can't sit and read as I used to, and decent TV is a nice way to fill the evenings.

I use this one a lot:

"The seven simple machines upon which all Western civilization is based are the wheel, the lever, the wedge, the inclined plane, the pulley, the small-block Chevy and the Colt Government Model 1911."

Back to back

Joe Namath
The green black woman hollering
Tom Selleck

I hope it never happens. I don't think my TV would survive it.
