Why the high prices?

I have an unfired stainless 5.5" fixed sight Old Army with ivory polymer grips. Box, papers, everything. An unintentional safe queen. I am not a BP shooter, but bought this on a whim on the second day of deer season several years ago after killing out on opening morning. I went into town while the rest of the family was hunting... after killing the buck of a lifetime... feeling pretty good... saw it, bought it. Never shot it. Shortly after that I bought one of the matching stainless 45LC cylinders. Again... never fired.

I am seeing some really crazy prices on these things for some reason, and I am wondering if the ones I saw sell recently on GB were flukes, or is there really something to this?

I had planned to shoot it with my grandkids, and if one of them took to it, giving it to them. But the prices I am seeing makes me think I should sell it and get a couple of the kids something instead.

So... anyway, I am not looking to start any bidding here..... it is NOT FOR SALE... but, I would like to hear from the folks here what is a realistic value for it, so I can decide what to do.

Thanks in advance.

As noted, not many made, combined with the stopping of production on all Old Army's, and the folks who enjoy SASS have created a "demand." I wanted one, but the prices have kept me from buying one so far.

Wow. In the last week I have seen 2 sell on GB. One for about $1100 and the other just over $1400? There are two that I saw last night, one just under $900, the other just OVER $900 - still climbing, with plenty of time left.

I know that bodes well for me, but just seems ridiculous and he!!, I would almost feel guilty.

I said ALMOST....

What to do what to do....

In any case.... thanks for the feedback folks. I presheate it!

Jim, after looking at your pictures a little closer, I think that extra cylinder I have is ACP, not LC. That is my duty round, and also what I load constantly (at least if feels that way), so I think that is what I bought. I will have to go look.

Related to that, another reason I never shot the OA is because I bought a SS 3.5" birdshead New Vaq in ACP and shoot that one regularly.

Again, thanks for the feedback.

I don't think it is 45 acp. That would be a No No shooting smokeless. What you see in my pictures is a RIMED 45acp. It is called a 45 special. I use it with BP that way I don't have to load a full case of 45 Colt BP or use a filler.

Not to be argumentative.... I am here to learn from those who know more than me... I am a shooter, not an expert on the hardware, but here is a link to what I have....

Check the list.... there is a 45acp version for the OA....

Hey Pardon me while I wipe the egg of my face. I just assumed you had the same conversion cylinders that I did    Mine are made by Howell. They don't make any acp as far as I know. Howell doesn't recommend anything other than BP and Cowboy loads with smokeless. I know there are some that load them up more than that.

45 special? isn't that .45 auto rim actually? :?

The 45 Special was developed by a CAS guy and supplied by him. It is made by Starline but they can not sell it because he has a paten on it.

I recently bought a NIB SS adjustable OA for $400. But I did pony up $800 for a NIB SS fixed 5 1/2" OA. Both local sales. Internet sites seem to 'inflate' the worth ... or so I've noticed.

Kirst even has .45ACP cylinders for the 1858 replicas.

The .45AR has an extra thick rim so that it headspaces properly in .45ACP-chambered DA's. The .45Special (or is it Cowboy Special) has the same rim as the .45Colt.

Not a problem. Like I said, I am a shooter, not a collector or historian. I just know what I have and where it makes holes compared to where I am aiming. Thanks"

Years ago I wanted one, but unless I win the lottery, I am going to say have fun to those who buy them.
