A bit of small town news. Amory is in N.E. MS, a small town about 15 miles from me. I reckon the gator was just shopping in downtown.

AMORY – A small alligator was captured after it was spotted roaming an area of South Main Street on Saturday.

“Somebody reported an alligator crossing the road at South Main and Third,” said APD Investigator Andy Long. “This is the first time I remember us having a call, and it might not be our last.”

The Amory Police Department, assisted by the Amory Fire Department, MedStat and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, captured the gator.

Long was unsure specifically where the alligator originated, but said it didn’t take long until it was apprehended.

“Alligator sightings are fairly common. Their populations are growing, and they’re leaving large bodies of water and moving up tributary ditches. Main Street in Amory is somewhere you don’t think about seeing a gator, though,” said Ray Darty of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

Darty estimated the alligator was 4 feet long and weighed 45 to 50 pounds. He released it into a wildlife management area.

“Alligators aren’t really a threat to humans. What happened recently at Disney World is very rare,” Darty said. “People should avoid contact, and they won’t have a problem.”

"To get to the other pond at Disney!"

That's a little guy, easily managed. Would have taken me all of 10 minutes to deal with him.

Just how far north are gators now?

You have to distinguish between indigenous and non-indigenous ranges. Indigenous range is as far north as southern TN along the Mississippi river and other major waterways, and coastal N.Carolina and Virginia. They are common throughout MS, AL, and other southern tier states.

Other instances of widely scattered gator sightings and captures have been made in NY,NJ, etc. These are often escapee's from zoo's, private owners, etc.

Around here, they inhabit the Tenn-Tom waterway in fairly large numbers, and can be easily spotlighted at night. We have a annual hunting season for them, and a nearly record size gator was bagged near Starkville a couple years ago. This one weighed 620lbs, and was nearly 13' long.

ETA: They'll eat whatever they can ambush, but generally prefer Liberals.

He crossed the road because it's mating season. Duh!!! :D

Was reading in another forum about a lady who got away from an Alligator with only one .22 round fired.
She shot her husband in the leg when they were both running from the gator...

:D

Had one as far west as Harbor City Ca. But they finally trapped it to protect it from an environment in which it had grown at least a foot since it was released. Of course the saviors ended up killing poor ole Reggie. A fact they tried to hide by claiming another gator was our famous Reggie.

I was coming from Alabama one fine rainy day on I-10 and I came off the bridge I saw 4 cops wrestling with a fairly large gator in the middle of the interstate....those were some brave folks...

Very rare sightings in east tn, mostly starved to death ones some dipstick turned loose.
If they were ever to be around we'd just eat them like every other critter round here, still alot of us type of folk around.
The picture posted..... all I seen was a few good meals and a new belt or three. 8)

That's similar to the way we stay safe from bears when hiking in SE Alaska. You just need to find a hiking partner who runs slower than you do.

Why did the alligator cross the road? To prove to the armadillo that it could be done.
Geoff
Who notes when the local gators get over 5 foot in the development, Fish and Game haul them away. I've got a decoy named Ichabod in the back to judge size.

Trying hard to not hijack this thread,,, but I saw something somewhere that begs to be repeated.

It relates to this;
"Was reading in another forum about a lady who got away from an Alligator with only one .22 round fired.

I saw a picture/sticker set on the back of a car. It showed two people running. One skinny & one fat. It said: "Be kind to fat people, they may save your life one day." The two people running were running from a bear, and the fat one was the closest to the bear.
