Who shoots a long barrel single six?

I've never given much attention to the single sixes with the 9 1/2" barrel, because I feel a .22 is something that should be small enough to easily pack or carry.

My friend has one of these, like new in box, that he offered to me for a good price. What are your experiences with them?

I expected it to feel very muzzle-heavy, but when I held it, it was surprisingly easy to point. Obviously, the long sight radius has a geometrical advantage. Otherwise, does the long barrel really help accuracy? Does anyone actually carry one in a holster?

I'd love to read your opinions, especially from someone who has multiple single sixes in various barrel lengths.

I have had one for 5 years or so...I love mine. It only takes a little getting used to a
"buntline" barrel, but the good thing is....they point as good as some .22 rifles. I have chronographed .22 LR at about 1300 fps. and .22 Mag about 1800. That's pretty good
out of a revolver. I have used it to hunt coyotes with the mag. cylinder and have scored
on a few....about 75 yards or so by pacing. Clean kills....no problem. I carry mine in an Uncle Mikes nylon holster...they were one of the few that had one for a barrel that long.
It always accompanies me out to the desert to my favorite shooting spots. Hope you enjoy!

I had one MANY years ago & let it slip away. But,,, a few years back I got another one. Then I got another one,,,! Then a friend got his,,,! They are good shooters too!

Now you are talking alot of fun in my opinion! I am a big fan of the lonnnnng barrels. In my shooter box I have 4-5/8, 6 & a 9-1/2" Single Sixes along with a few Bearcats, The girls love the bearcats & my Son's & friends always migrate to the 9-1/2" because they are fun to shoot & they can hit with them. I enjoy shooting all my singles sixes, and as you can see I prefer the stainless ones.

SteveRuger and myself took a bounch of scouts shooting. Steve has a old beater 9 1/2 inch from our friend in Alaska (Scott), this gun has been seen allot of rounds down the pipe. The hard rubber grips are almost worn smooth and there is a serious lack of blueing. This gun out shot Steve's slab side target and my Smith model 41 target 22. The real bummer is he will not sell it to me.

You'll love shooting it! As was written above, they have tack driving accuracy.

But the biggest surprise is point shooting and hip shooting. The barrel length acts like sonar. You can tell from the feel in your hand where the barrel is pointing and shoot amazingly accurate without even using the sights like plinking cans.

My NM 9 1/2" was my first Ruger purchased, and it is a hoot to shoot!

It is accurate, and the barrel length really helps.

I have slightly larger hands, and it doesn't seem muzzle-heavy to me (although one would expect it to be).

It's fun to take over to our 100 yd. rifle range and shoot at the junk on the berm (2x4's, etc.).

Great revolver and great fun!

Shooting buddy and fellow silhouette trouble maker and retired Border Patrolman Major Golden factored his Single-Six 9-1/2" in becoming International Revolver Aggregate Champion. Old "Hoss" Golden couldn't have done it if his little Long Poke Ruger didn't shoot straight.

My experience with them has been nothing but good. Back in the seventies, I carried mine in an old Hunter holster on just a plain ol' leather belt. Had the magnum cylinder for it as well. As someone else mentions here, it's sorta like having a miniature .22 rifle with you. I put some thicker Jay Scott grips on mine.

Don't know what your friend's "good price" is, but if it's anything reasonable, I'd jump on it if I were you. This is a photo of my "new" one...from 1966.

I used to have one back in the 80's. It was extremely accurate. Had to sell it. Hopefully I'll run into another some day.

Besides the tried and true .22 cal. examples, how about a .32 H&R?

Non standard hammers or grip frames, of course.

I have a pair of long barreled Ruger single actions. The first is an old Single Six that originally had a 5-1/2" barrel on it. I had it re-barreled to 9-1/2":



The second one is a Super Single Six convertible with a 9-1/2" barrel:



I use a basic Hunter holster mounted on my belt in crossdraw fashion to pack them around the ranch....

I know we've talk alot about these long barreled single sixs. Which brings me to a friend that happens to have 1 for sell. He said he wants me to make him an offer. The gun is a nice shooter and he's had it since new. Has extra magnum mag and a holster, box of shells. It's a 9-1/2 barrel got some wear marks on the cylinder and end of barrel from holster. What would be a good price 350-400 maybe? Thanks
