Which cylinder do I have?

I just acquired what I think is a Single Six Magnum (it is marked Single Six and originally came with 2 cylinders) if this is what it is it would date to 1968. One cylinder is missing, I have the fluted cylinder which I think is the 22 LR and assume the missing non fluted would be the 22 Magnum Cylinder ?

I don't believe the mag cylinder would be unfluted on a gun that old.

What's the rear face of the cylinder look like? Is it smooth/flat, or is there a recessed ring machined into it? Smooth/flat should be .22LR, recessed with the groove .22 mag.

The chambers are easily inspected so one can discern calibre.

LR chambers are of an even diameter.

Magnum chambers exhibit a "throat" like centerfire chambers.

The non fluted cylinder for the .22 Mag started in 1975 for the blue guns and sometime in 1976 for the stainless steel guns. So all Old Model Single-Sixs and Super Single-sixes had fluted cylinders.

Take your cylinder out,, & try inserting a 22 mag round in it. If it fits,, it's a magnum. A 22 mag round won't chamber in the 22 LR cylinder.

If you're missing the LR cylinder, I have one from an old model I don't need!

cas, I believe you have it backwards. In Flatgate's pics the LR cylinder is on the left.

street, I have a SS bought new in '75 that has a fluted mag. cylinder. 63-375XX. I don't know at which serial # it changed.

Thanks guys, I had looked at the cylinders on the Ruger Manual for this particular model and the more I looked the more confused I became, the pic flatgate posted made it all clear. It is the magnum cylinder pictured on the right W/O the firing pin groove, it will accept a 22 Mag cartridge and it is easy to see the throat (once pointed out).

lowest blue 64-16570
lowest stainless "200th yr." 64-65175

Some of the early New Model Singles-Sixs had both fluted cylinders with a firing pin groove. Some later .22 cylinders didn't have a firing pin groove. when the Mag. Cyl. didn't have flutes.
