As someone who studies and teaches history I find the demise of the History Channel to be truly depressing.

Up until the late 1990's and even, occasionally, a bit after that, HC produced some extraordinary programs.
Some they produced themselves, and they also paid royalties to run some of the better British historical documentaries.

For years, I recorded many of these shows on high quality VHS tape. Got to where I had 170 tapes, 3 hours each!

As DVD became the dominant thing, I transferred several dozen of the very best episodes onto disc, in order to
provide visuals for the kids that just couldn't be topped.

Much like the Learning Channel. About the same time that Discovery came along the Learning Channel was just that. I remember watching a series called "Hands" which showed several different hand crafts still practiced in Ireland. Shoemaking, whetstone making, a guy who still made coracles the old way, etc. Lots of cool stuff but no more.

And, I suspect that the reason that Bigfoot hasn't been found is a conspiracy. Every year for a century millions of hunters are in every nook and cranny of the country and all o f them have just agreed to keep the location of Bigfoot a secret.

exavid, there is one place you might look to replace the learning Chanel and the "Hands" series. RFDTV has a regular weekly series called Texas Country Reporter that shows and interviews individuals who are noted for hand crafts, specialty business, and special activities of all kinds. There are other series programs on RFDTV that you might find informative also, including showing ways that many activities, including historical methods, are still in practice.

Pertinent at present is what I consider the best coverage of the Pasadena New Years Day Parade shown on RFDTV coming up Jan 1, 2016.

Not a conspiracy, just an example of peer pressure. Anyone who has reported seeing Bigfoot while out hunting has been mercilessly ridiculed and accused of being drunk or a liar. This doesn't exactly encourage open reporting.

In 1964 my company sent me to Willow Creek California to treat old power poles for ground line decay. Willow Creek is the very heart of Big Foot country and the town has a huge statue of it and the town hypes it up for tourists. My job was following the power lines through the wilderness. I hired 4 or 5 locals to dig and treat the poles.
I shortly heard a dozen story`s pro and con. Some believed, some didn't, some claimed to know others doing hoax`s etc.
One morning I lost the clutch in my truck getting too far down a service road that had been used to build the line way back. We were about as far back in as you could get in that country. I sent several guys to walk out, hitch hike to town and get a wrecker. I stayed with the truck and worked. Then I couldn't help but remember the story's of Bigfoot. I was happy to hear the wrecker coming about five hours later. It took us 12 hours more to get my truck to town! Never worked so hard in my life pulling cable up the steep trail, hooking to trees, pulling the wrecker up and repeating time after time pulling the truck up and then again the wrecker etc!
We got back to town about 02:00 am. I wired the company to send me either a 4 WD or some mules. A couple days later they sent me a huge old Dodge Power wagon. That was a tough and adventurous couple months! Right after I left the town got about half wiped out by a flood.

re: 'ancient aliens' OK, there are some hard-to-explain megalithic stone construction projects with 1000 ton stacks of rocks. Among others, one of the most difficult to understand, is the 'H-block' formations at about 12000' on the flanks of the Andes.

One of the enjoyable videos was of an archeology team from ?Cornell? who were trying to replicate the effort of moving a 40 ton stone building blocks from the recognized source at sea level, down a trail, across a small river, and up 14000' to Machu Picchu. I lost track of the series after their second seasonal assault where they were still stymied by getting across the river. Their stone block was IIRC around 3 tons.

I do find it interesting but the episodes are way too scripted. I also agree, history channel has gone way down hill, too many pseudo reality type shows that try to incorporate some history, now and again. So sad. Coogs.

I can't say anything about the HC show, I have no interest in any of their sensationalized garbage, but a fellow named Joseph Heywood wrote an excellent 'what-if' book on the subject of Hitler escaping Berlin, titled "The Berkut". Plausible concept! In the afterword, he raises a few good questions concerning the known facts about the Soviet's search. All in all, an entertaining read.

I used to really like the HC years ago. Just about had my TV welded to it. I cant understand why it`s all staged reality shows now. Must get higher ratings because of the different type`s that tune in. I think they no longer should be able to call it a "History Channel".

Was the History Channel the one that aired Giraldo's quest into the vault that belonged to Al Capone and all he found after weeks of build up was a coke bottle or something about as important? The History channel was fairly decent for a while but the 'reality " business is really inane.

I don't think it was on the HC. Trivia, my grandpa was also named Adolph, but he had about 13 years on him. I doubt that name is used much anymore. My wife gets mad at me when I watch Hitler stuff on tv. I tell her I feel obligated to so we don't forget that part of history. I had a lot of family in that one.
Those lumberjack and Ice road trucker shows etc might be interesting at times but I don't see anything to do with history about them. About a week ago though, they did have a lot of World War one stuff on for a change.
