Where does the President live?

I always thought the POTUS lived in the White-house. According to Wikipedia the presidents residence is on the second floor of the White-house.

So...while watching the series "West Wing", the president has said several times, "I'm going over to the residence" then walks out the door. In the episode I watched today, his daughter wanted to know where he was. His chief of staff said he was making campaign calls. His daughter then said, "He's not in his office". Chief of staff says, "one of the rules were that he couldn't make campaign calls from a government office so he was over in the residence.

All of this seems to indicate that the President has a residence outside the White-house. So why would they make this up in the series if the President does indeed live inside the White-house?

By the way, my spell checker wants a hyphen in White-house.

The Presidential apartment is on the second floor. The main floor is open to the public for tours except when in use for state formal dinners.

Certain historical rooms are not open for public entry, but can be viewed by the tourists.

Has anyone actually watched the series "West Wing"? It's not one of those "in the future" things. So I'm really wondering why they would have him living in a separate residence from the White-house?

Sure, it's TV, but why would they indicate such a ridiculous thought when everyone knows the POTUS lives in the White-house? That's just plain stupid even for fiction writers.

From the oval office, he says he is going "over" to the residence. He doesn't say he's going up to the residence. Anyway, it's a good show. I've just started on the second season streaming from Netflix.

First of all, it's not the Whitehouse, it's the White House. And the Oval Office is not in the White House proper, but in the West Wing. So, to go from the Oval Office to the Residence, you walk over to the White House from the West Wing and upstairs to the Residence.

It's interesting but the scenes of the white house on the west wing are pretty dern accurate... but one of the interesting parts of this is when they show the president in his 'living room' the scene with the couches and stuff, that is actually the hall way on the 2nd floor... between the master bedroom and private dining room which is just off the residential kitchen.... the funny part of the show is when Martin Sheen walks out of the oval office and in a few seconds is in his residence.... actually this would take closer to 10 minutes... when Bush was in the white house it looked to me like the family actually spent more time on the 3rd floor... there is an atrium up there that had a big screen TV... and was mush more informal. the west wing is a building off to the side of the actual white house. How do I know this, well I've been there more than once and not on a tour but to work on the chimneys. 35 fireplaces all total between the white house and the west wing.

I've watched the whole series. The first four seasons are really good, then it falls off. Reason was the guy who wrote/produced the show left after season 4. I wish the integrity of those in the real White House matched the integrity of those on thh show.

Thanks for enlightening me guys. I really had no idea about this stuff. If you search West Wing on Wikipedia, it gives a good explanation with pictures and an aerial drawing of the complex. Been a while since I took a civics class.

Perhaps the writer who wrote "he is over at the residence" recalled that President Truman lived across the street while the Whitehouse was being reconstructed.

On second thought, the writer probably never knew that tidbit.
