This is why I live where it doesn't freeze

That happened over in Terre Haute on I-70 I believe...🤔
I've been driving in snow and ice for quite a some time now. And, I've had a few close calls, but no major accidents.
My SOP is just to expect slick pavement, and drive on it accordingly.

I have lost control of my truck 3 times in 25 years driving on black ice. One time I sideswiped a guardrail, the other two times I was able to regain control by steering into the slide.
I have learned to watch for dark shiny roads. Also I watch for mist coming off other vehicles tires, it means it's too warm for black ice.
When it gets down in the low 20's black ice isn't as slippery.
Ever grab an ice cube out of the freezer and have it stuck to your fingers? Same thing happens with tires on ice when it's cold enough. You have traction.....unless you hit a spot where salt has altered the freezing point.

I'm a SoCal beach kid. I had never heard of black ice. On a mountain road, with a several hundred drop on one side, in Spain, I suddenly spun out and started doing donuts down the road. No control, no idea what was going on. Finally came to a stop. It wasn't until years later (on a CHIP's TV show) that I heard of black ice and put two and two together.
This was just a couple of minutes earlier.

I can’t believe we are still allowed to call it black ice. Seems racist.

Well to be fair there is White Ice also......sidewalks, walkways, and the dreaded porch steps.....seems every year on the news there are stories about increased ER visits by folks who slipped on white ice. Heck last week we had freezing rain...I put my coffee on my car roof and it slid down off the roof and down my windshield.....

Black Ice was covered in Driver Ed.....funny how nobody even thought of making a racial joke about it back then. Guess it was just too common.

I won't mention anything about my favorite ICE....some of the more sensitive members here will get riled up...however, I will admit that I have been a victim and taken down by black and white ice ...even though I was the one wearing a mask...

So y'all be safe out there. There's something called "black ice" that you have to careful to watch out for.

James McMurtry has a song that encapsulates this situation very well. It's called "Holiday." One of the last lines that is stuck in my head is "damn near as deadly as Texans on ice..." I'm a Texican and I can attest to this.

Speaking of freezing....read the forecast during dinner... temps here going to be in the teens for the next week or so.....calling for risk of record breaking cold and freezing rain......after rebuilding just about my entire lower level a few years ago due to frozen/busted pipes, reading the forecast made me put my chili dogs down mid completion. Wasn't taking any chances....went downstairs, popped the panel, shut off the water main (not easy where its located ), grabbed a light and outside to disconnect hoses and drain. Should have done it already.

I did see a very nice buck as I walked around the side of the house. He looked like he had a rough rut. Sides were marred pretty good. I'd say 3yrs old. Fairly decent rack. Brow tines are weird here...can be a nice 10 pt or 8 pt depending if it has any. Sometimes they are so nubby you can't see them by flashlight. Heck from the looks of him they may have been busted off.

Either way.....the pipes are drained, and came across a wandering buck.....worth cold chili dogs and a warm beer? It's all relative I guess. I've moved on to my nightly bourbon anyway so all's good.

I worked for a company that was founded in Buffalo, NY and had its headquarters there for 75 years. In all that time the office was only closed for 3 days due to weather.

Then they moved to North Carolina. The first year there they were closed for 7 days due to black ice, and another couple of days due to a hurricane.

I heard some of the old timers say that Buffalo wasn't so bad after all.
