What's your favorite packing pistol? Custom or not.

I'am looking to get into more custom revolvers for CCW, right now I carry a 396 mountain lite and love it. Looking to stick with the 44 special round. Right now I am thinking of getting a flattop, cutting it to 3.5", adding bowen front sights and a lanyard loop, rounding the butt and getting some grashorn grips, what say you? God bless.

For CC, I like the little CA Bulldog .44Special. Also have a Ruger .44Spec Sheriff (3 1/2" New Vaquero) for the same purpose, but don't have a CC holster for it yet. Not interested in custom guns in this category.

Well, without getting into the "pistol vs. revolver" debate (and yes, Scarlett, a pistol is not a revolver)...

Around the farm, my hands down favorite is a 4-5/8" Ruger Flat Top .44 Special stoked with Keith's favorite slug...a 240 gr LSWC HP and a healthy dose of Win 231 or Unique it'll take care of the occasional rampaging thistle top, Ferrel cats, long reaches to scare the hell out of errant coyote or finishing a slob hunter's gut shot doe from the adjacent land. All in all, it's a hellofa lead slinger.

For trips to town, the movies or dinner out to the big city (Louisville), it's a well used S&W M60 .357 or M36 both with a 3" tubes. With 125 gr Remington Golden-Sabers, or Hornady Critical Defense FTX's, one or the other is my constant companion while away from home. Either is heavy enough to tame recoil for follow up shots, but light enough to make all day carry in a good OWB holster a breeze, they're a joy to carry.

Seems to me that a .44 spl. (New) Vaquero sheriff's model with a grip swap for a bird's head grip would be a lot easier project. Just my $0.02 worth. :D

We have to list all our carry guns on our permits (and I have a pile listed) but the one that leaves home with me the most is the LC9 that I won at the Ruger dinner in Harrisburg! :D It's just a very nice combination of light weight for carry but in a substantial caliber. Currently stoked with Hornady Critical Duty (non +P).
Too bad the LC9 will soon (March 7, 2014) no longer be available in Ca. :(

For CCW, I prefer a 1951 Colt Commander in 38 Super, with Ivory grips. Bought used (Since I was about a year old when it was made!). A few minor custom tweaks and the bluing is worn to 75%. For quick runs to the market, etc: I have a 649 in 38 spl.

For field carry, an OM Ruger 45 Colt. With hot handloads==it will do for anything in North America if I do my job. Matched up with a Randall model 23 knife and both with buffalo horn grips. I expect it will be replaced with a Gary Reeder 454 being built on a NM SBH, with 5.5 barrel and ported.

I carried a Charter Bulldog as a alternate for a while and I have a Colt Sheriff's in 44 I carry sometimes (pretty much a desk drawer gun in the office)

Robb: That whole gun is fine! As for packin' pistol. Either a Kahr CM9 or Taurus 850 (in .38 SPCL) for daily carry. In the field , a 4 5/8" Blackhawk convertible (.45Colt/ACP) first and a 1911 right behind it.

Concealed carry is either a 3" SP-101 or a Kahr CW45, depending on the weather.... the Kahr is more concealable under light clothing. In the woods, an old 4" Colt Trooper works for me.... not too heavy, but still packs enough punch for anything I'll encounter.

During the week I carry a Colt Commander. When I go out in the hills on the weekend I carry a Ruger Blackhawk in 45 LC with a 4 5/8 inch barrel. First couple chambers have shot in them for snakes. After that serious 45LC that could hurt a bear. I guess if I had to settle on one revolver to carry it would be my S&W 325PD.

When carrying revolvers concealed in the field it's a Ruger Alaskan 454 with the GP100 fixed sight model compact grip. If carrying open, sometimes the Alaskan but usually a BFR in 500JRH or 475 Linebaugh. A couple 44 Mags round out the group at times in a 5.5" Super Blackhawk with a Hunter grip frame and a 4 5/8" SS Vaquero with a SBH Dragoon grip frame.
For social carry at times when the Glock 20 is too large for my clothing choices the 2 1/4" SP101 357 comes along in my front pocket. If I'm really underdressed it may be the NAA 22 Mag is the only thing that'll work.

Dougader, love the job he did on the birds head. I have a nice stainless sherrifs model that may need the same work. What did that set you back if you don't mind?

It was about 800, but that included removing a flaw in my frame and then fitting the birdshead grip. He also added a free-spin pawl, a Colt style crescent ejector rod button, chamfered the cylinder and did a real slick action job. He also fitted a s&w j-frame adjustable rear sight and his custom front base and ramped front post sight. It handles like a dream.

I never tire of seeing your PPP, Short Barrel. I doubt I could handle the recoil of full boat 45 Colt in your gun, though. I'm betting my mid-frame New Vaquero weighs as much or more than your large frame Vaquero. It's a beauty, to be sure. 8)
