What you know is important but

Who you know and how they show it may get more attention.
Over the years I got to know and was friends with a guy (John) who became the Chief Deputy in an adjoining county. We'd talk now and then and I slipped him some info on things I saw time to time. He's no longer with the department but that's another story. Yesterday I stopped for gas and at the next pump was a Deputy I'd met and talked to a few times when we were in Burger King for lunch. I hadn't seen this guy for at least 1 1/2 years but he looked at me and said "I know your face but can't remember your name". No big deal so I told him and asked why he'd know my face. He said "John called you to our table in BK and introduced you to all the Deputies and detectives who happened to be there that day". Yeah, I remembered that since the entire eating area turned to look when I was hailed from across the room and waved over to a table containing 1/2 the cops in a 40 mile radius. The Deputy commented that "John wasn't much on showing his friendship so if you were that close, there was probably good reason".

Yep, being friendly with the police/Sheriff’s deputies in my county and surrounding counties has never been a negative experience. Sounds like Mobuck is in a similar situation!

Yep,, it always pays to know the right people.

I've had a few times over the last few decades where LEO's have introduced me to other deputies with something like; "This is Tyrone. He's always armed, good back up & a better shot than most of the Department."

I'm truly honored to have their trust.

I have a relative who is a corrections officer. He really insulted a newly minted State Hwy Patrol officer with a similar statement about me. He made it worse when he continued with this "I know him. He won't run. He won't freeze in place. He won't shoot me by mistake. I'm not that sure about you".

I had lunch today with the Warden, the Chief Deputy Warden, a few Associate Wardens, some department heads and other mucky-mucks that I didn't know, in recognition of my 25 years with the department. The food was nice, but, truth be told, I'd hsve rather eaten with my partners.

By the way, this will also be my last year. The next soiree will be my retirement party, which I will avoid at all costs. 8)
