There are only 4 ingredients in a Manhattan: Sweet Vermouth, cherry, Bitters, and Booze. So is there one ingredient that is the most important?

Recipe: (Makes 2) 5 oz Bourbon or Rye, 1.5 oz Grassoti Sweet, 6 dashes Peychauds, 1 Tbsp syrup from the Luxardo cherries, Garnish 2 cherries per glass. Keep glasses in the freezer.
I alternate between bourbon and rye as the mood for sweetness dictates.
And to answer the OP, ALL ingredients are of equal importance.

too sweet... but the bourbon is of course the key...
My late father in law, a yankee for sure, used to make up a batch with ice for happy hour and by the time we got down to just light brown water I was in need of help getting up to make it to the dinning room table.

Avoid the mixers, just booze, possibly ice or the bottle chillin' in the refrigerator. I like it cold and the mixers are what will make you the sickest or hung over.

Interesting discussion. I only drink vodka, usually neat. I don't understand the need to disguise alcohol.
Sorry for the off topic but, ski. what brand & cold or ambient temp. But of course, you have to drink vodka with a name like your handle. ;)
FWIW, I like Luksusowa better than Chopin.
