I have a few center fire 77's and they have a Mauser type safety. I just looked at a really nice 308 77 and it has a tang safety. How old are these tang safety guns? When did they stop making them and why? Is there a reason Ruger got rid of these? Anything I need to know ??

Shooter, the original model 77's all had the tang safety. When Ruger decided on a design change they went with the Mauser/Winchester type of safety. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the tang safety models. I've got a 77R .270 w/tang safety that I've hunted with since 1981. I wouldn't dream of getting rid of it. It's really just a matter of personal choice. I really prefer the tang safety myself, but own both styles.

Ditto to this. A nice 77 is a nice 77, and which safety is "better" is purely a matter of taste.

Definitely "druthers" - After buying/trying an M-77MKII, I sold it in favor of sticking with my tang-safety M-77's.

One of the things I particularly like about the tang safety M-77's is that the trigger is adjustable.
