Hello everyone.Going to pick up my new Ruger Flattop Blackhawk 41 magnum with 6" barrel distributed by Williams shooters supply.It is the one that was wriiten about in aprils Shooting Times magazine.If i deceide to put a red dot scope on it,which would you recommend.Please be specific as far a model.I would like to put either an Aimpoint or Trijicon.Also if you have any exp.with these could you please comment.I would like to use this set up for Whitetails at 50 yds or less.Thanks for reading and all info is appreciated. :D

Parashoot, Welcome to our forum. I strongly recommend that you start with the factory iron sights. Even with older eyes, 50 yards is not a difficult shot for these fine revolvers with their open sights. Put your funds into load development and shooting practice. IMHO any sort of scope creates more handling and carry problems than you gain in distance shooting.

John;
I would like to politely disagree with you. I have had vision problems for some time. I have taken several deer with my scoped revolvers and the scopes have allowed me pinpoint accuracy in spite of my vision problems.

In the past couple or three years I have been using Red Dot sights with excellent results.

For a magnum revolver, an excellent Red Dot sight is the Ultra Dot. I prefer the 30mm size as it has a wider field of view. Ultra Dots have stood up to heavy recoil with an almost unmatched level of reliability. This includes the "heavy hitters" like .454 Casull, .460 Magnum, and .500 Magnums.

Dale, have you ever used an aperture rear sight like the "One Ragged Hole"? I'm hoping I might be able to get tighter groups with these aging eyes without the hassle/expense/looks of going to optics...Opinion?

Bucks Owin;
A number of years ago, I tried an aperture sight on a couple of handguns. I just didn't take to them.

Aperture sights work extremely well on a rifle where you have a good "cheek weld" on the butt stock and with your eye positioned close to the aperture. Neither of those things apply to a handgun.

I HAVE used a glasses mounted aperture extensively and it DOES work and work well (the eye is close to the aperture). However, I didn't find that it worked well in the field. However, on the range it allowed me to do good work for many years.

Now, nearly all of my shooting with handguns utilize a Red Dot sight and I am an enthusiastic supporter of them. A rather high percentage of NRA Bullseye shooters agree with me. You ought to see the firing line at Camp Perry, Ohio during the Nationals...
