What is good accuracy for a scope revolver at 50 yards?

Charger stock now but have a bunch of trigger goodies on the shelf waiting for some time. This gun shoots tighter than my big Browning.

Weatherby 243 Win. This one is heading into 200 yard testing as soon as I get my 3 x 12 Burris. Already shoots a dime @ 100 yards with 2.5 x 8 Leupold (for sale by the way)

Guess I'm trying to make a point here, I'm quite a scoped handgun fanatic and YES with the right loads and hands most any can perform remarkably like a rifle.

So my advice is to set your goal for accuracy and figure out how to attain that goal. It just takes work and patience.

Did someone say FA? :D I routinely invite my rifle shooting buddies out to the range for show and tell... My custom barreled and tuned action TCs are right there too...

SBH Bisley Hunter 45 Colt. .451 bore, I reamed the throats to .4525, forcing to 11 degrees. Belt Mtn base pin. 355gr WFN, water cooled 5/1 ww/lino from a custom .452 LBT mould. Homemade lube. H110 max load, just under 1200fps. 2X Weaver. It always shoots like this if I do my part. I've never shot copper or factory loads in it. Shoots 255 and 275gr plinkers over Unique just as good. It probably shoots better than I can.

Boys the pictures of the guns were nice, but he was asking about accuracy from a handgun. I would think targets would help him more.

I have a few different handguns that I have set up for hunting.

I shot this target with my old model Vaquero. I use it for my woods gun during hunting season:

This is a target I shot using my SBH Hunter in .45 Lc at 50 yds with a 2x Burris scope:

Hope this helps.

I get .5 to .75 inches (5 groups of 5 rds) with my RH Hunter and a 2x scope. That's with my handloads of 210 gr GDHP over 27.5 gr of W296. I have tried that same charge using Remington 210 gr SJHP bulk bullets and I get the same groups at 50 ft as the Gold Dots, but have not shot the Remingtons at full range yet.

Those 50 yd groups were shot sitting (no back rest) using a bipod trigger stick shooting downslope. I'd love to try it at 50-100 yds using a decent bench and bags. I have get consistent groups under 1.75 inches at 100 yds. I get quite a few around 1.25 inches, but have not broken that barrier.

Well if group pictures is what we want I found some but can't find my best ones, these are from when I was still testing with the 44 SRH these are from back in the mid 90's,,, been a LONG time.

First is a pic of my cast 240 micro groove from Lee and some 296 powder, speeds are noted.

Next is 50 yards with 300 Nosler and 22.5 H110, I ended up settling on 20.5
IMG_0155.jpg

Same thing but backed down to 21.5 grains H110
IMG_0157.jpg

20.5 grains H110 but @ 75 yds
IMG_0159.jpg

This is where I made the decision on 20.5 grains it's 2.9" @ 100 yards
IMG_0162.jpg
[/list]

100 Yards with 20.5 grains this would have been before I was completely done adjusting it This one is 2.7"
IMG_0161.jpg

Honestly now looking through all this I believe I was mistaken on 1" @ 100 yards,,, I'm pretty sure I stopped with 2.5" @ 100 yards. I made these for hunting and had full confidence in head shots with this load.

Anyway you get the idea,, most of us showing data here have done a LOT of work to get to these groups. You can cheat and try what we have done and see how they work for you.

Nice shooting, I see most of you take the time to work up a load that works for your handgun. Revolvers unlike single shots have six differant chambers (if it's a 6 shooter) that gives it more chances for the machining to go wrong from chamber to chamber. They are usually very close but if you get one that will shoot 2" ctc groups with all six chambers at 100 yards with a scoped revolver, it's a keeper. I see many of you have revolvers that will do this or close, that shows quallity revolvers, good loads and great shooting. I will be working up the loads for my used SRH 9.5" 44 mag. I will scope it and the 2 bullets I will use will be the 240 grain Hornady XTP (for whitetail) and the Oregon Trail Trueshot Cast Bullets 44 Caliber (430 Diameter) 310 Grain Lead Flat Nose with Gas Check ,(anything I need greater penetration for) both ahead of H110 powder.

The groups I showed above are from your gun's twin,, maybe try the 300 Nosler with 20.5 H110. Actually I would imagine most 300 grain jacketed bullets will perform about the same if the same diameter.

H110 is a very good powder for this revolver.

Benchrest500... I'm envious of your collection. I can also see that you take your shooting very seriously.

I'm in there with Wil Terry. My scoped guns are two ten inch Freedom Arms sixguns that are amazing. 1.5" at 50 yards is not an impressive group with these guns. The guns are capable of way better than I am, I'm definitely the limiting factor in the ralationship. you aren't that far away from me if you ever want to try them out :)

Zeus: Is that offer still good?

I haven't shot a "bagged, scoped revolver" at 50 yards. I can share a level of accuracy for typical bullseye pistol shooting. People will send their 1911's off to talented pistolsmiths to have them group into sub 2" (and sub 1.7" is better, and 1.5" is great) at 50 yards-off a ransom rest.

The 10 ring at 50 yards is 1.7". If your pistol doesn't group inside that, then "possibles" aren't going to happen.

That was some awsome weapons. Thanks for the pictures and the information. I have another old friend that will get a kick out of seeing this. He has been talking about hunting with pistols for deer and elk. This may spur him on :D

Here is 25yd and 100yd targets from one of my 45's I cobbled together. Most are more accurate than you can imagine. Especially with a bit of tinkering on sights, throats, forcing cones, springs, ect.

Rested. Standing on my deck with my forearms resting on the railing. Shooting off the bag causes my POI to be different than field position. That was an experiment revolver. I did all the things that I have read about here to improve a 45. Those 10 shots in that group were probably something along the lines of shots 7 thru 16 out of that 45. With those 325 LBT's.
