What have we here!? Old Blackhawk Flattop

Here is my Uncle's Flattop. He thought he got it in '55, but according to the Ruger web site.... it looks like it was made in '56. I'll maybe give Ruger a call and see if they can tell me more!

Anybody recall the number for that dept.?

It's in pretty good shape but he thinks it's been shot 1000-1500 times. Blueing is worn from the holster sadly, and the cylinder ring is not so small.

So is this a Type 1? Ser. #3641

It is a Type 1 and according to the serial # it is probably a '56 gun. Nice old Flat Top. Dougan's book has serial # 1751-7320 as 1956 production, along with the Ross guns.

I wouldn't say it is "sadly" worn - I'd say it has character. I'd be proud to own it with that kind of family history knowing my uncle carried it with him. I much prefer this kind to a pristine model.

I agree... he carried it a lot back in those earlier years. He is 78 now and has no kids. I am hoping to inherit this someday. If I was to only have one gun from his collection, I'd really like it to be this one. It was the first "Magnum" I ever shot as a kid too.... so yes, the history is really cool!

He told me when I was there today, that he worked at the hardware store where this was shipped to. He had told the owner that he wanted to buy the first Blackhawk they got it, and he did!

Oh yeah.... as a little side-note:

He said the reason he has hearing trouble is probably from all the hot loads he shot through this back then, before hearing protection was "the in thing".

I know 357's have a nasty crack to them.. I prfer the deeper growl of a 44 mag.

It shoots perfect! He tells stories of quit long range shooting with it and I happen to believe. I've liked Rugers all my life, thanks in a large part to this particular one. I've also had some crazy long range hits with some of my Rugers.

I think most of them probably shoot better than most shooters do!

On Bob's List it now resides among a group of other Type I's shipped in March of 1956.

That would be a great shooter to enjoy for the rest of your life and then pass on to your kids for them to enjoy for their lifetime of shooting. The wear is honest use not abuse. I love to see one in that shape. It lets you know that it was cared for but used and enjoyed not stuck in a drawer and left to rust up.

ShortBBL, I have #5433. Not quite as nice looking as yours, but she shoots just fine. :D I did put in a Belt Mountain base pin and a new cylinder pawl. She locks up tight and shoots just fine. It ain't leavin' here. Congrats!

Great little shooter. I have an uncle who has a 6" security six and a Super Blackhawk, both blued and he keeps them in a drawer full of tools and nik naks. They make that one look like new.
