Let's see what strange pets everyone has.
I have a scorpion that I caught in my garage a year or two ago.

I haven't even gotten around to hand feeding it yet. And before you ask, I don't know if it's a boy or girl.

2 ways to go about this..

1) Lift its little skirt up and take a look-see..

2) Get eye to eye with it.. If it smiles and winks at you, its a little girl, and thinks your cute..
However, if you go eye to eye with it, and its stinger gets erect, and it winks at you, you might want to think twice about getting rid of it..

I have a demon who whispers suggestions, lewd thoughts, and wholly unkind but unfailingly accurate observations in my ear all the time. I ignore him by long habit but every once in a while ...

Want to trade your scorpion for him?

I always wondered where that bugger ran off to, went to a church wedding and he wouldn't follow me in, came out when it was over and the bugger had run off

"Does being married count?"

LMAO!!!!!!!!
I'm gonna show this to Linda!

I'm sure many folks will say their teenagers are the weirdest pets they have.

She passed on many years ago,,, but my Dad brought home a Monkey from the pacific after WWII. I was almost 19 when she passed. Growing up with a monkey for a pet was a bit special.

If you consider a scorpion as a "pet", methinks you may be in need of a professional.

Pets come from shelters.
Possessions come from breeders.

Horned Toads were my favorite as a kid, had them from the size of a quarter up to almost 4" long

I keep looking for one to show to Molly, she thinks they have to be dangerous to handle
Makes me laugh every time she goes on her rant about how ugly they are

I get all kinds of things in my garage but nothing I would call a pet.
Once we had a rather big Banana Spider that hung out by the front door overhang for several weeks. :D

Hi,

Huh?

Using that logic, I guess none of the birds or cats, the rabbit, fish and turtles, or even the ant lion I had when I was 10, would be considered pets, as they certainly didn't come from shelters.

Buy a bull from a breeder solely to keep those cows out there company, or a steer that's gonna end up wrapped in white paper in the freezer--it's a possession, sure. Buy a purebred dog (like the various hunting dogs buddies have) from a breeder, and it's a whole 'nuther thing!

I paid a whole bunch more for my Golden Retriever than I would have paid for a shelter dog. I bought him from a reputable breeder (NOT a puppy mill/pet store) because of his bloodlines. Hunting ability, trainability, and disposition were the reasons I chose this breeder.

Dozer is NOT a possession.... he's not even a pet; he's a family member.

As a kid, I had a baby opossum I found in the back yard. He (she?) was so ugly he was cute. It was neat to out your finger across his tail and he he wrapped in around your finger he was happy to hang upside down.

My folks had a pet owl for a few weeks. He tried to fly a bit to soon and was stuck on the ground. They feed him ground up meat bits until he was big enough to fly back up to his family in the barn. They named him Owl-bert. Later, when he was fully grown and and had babies, they renamed him Owl-lace.

My sister-in-Law (SIL) had a pair of pet rats. They were amazing fun, loving, and intelligent. They would do all sorts of antics to get your attention so that you would pick them up.

While not exactly a pet, when the SIL was working as a vet tech, she attended a wounded eagle. She was the only one at the clinic who could handle and feed that giant bird as everyone else was terrified of it.

I'm petless now. But in the past have had some very handsome German shepherds, and some mixed breeds that sort of took up with us. Last pet was a cat. Didn't want a cat, and she knew who she had to win over in order to stay! She lasted thirteen years.

Reminds me of a story:

My late father-in-law sold those drinking birds, the kind with that red liquid in a glass "bird" that tilted over and "drank" from a glass of water. Well, we went to visit his aging mother, and he offered to give her one.

"No, Sir," his mother protested. "I don't want any thing else I'll have to feed or water."

MY "pet" came from the intersection of two dirt roads out in front of my place where some low life Pile of You know what dumped her at 6 months old; Nobody claimed her and she became OURS; She's MY GIRL, My Car companion and will go out to get the mail or go riding with me any where; She lays under the table so I can warm my bare toes while on the computer OR give her a back and tummy rub with those same bare feet. She guards the house and let's know if someone comes around.
She's part of the family fer sure.

Coypu, flying squirrel, gopher tortoises, box turtles, african horned tortoise, alligator snapping turtle, horned toads, possums, chinchilla, gray cheek parrot, cockatiels, parakeets, Senegal parrot, fish, frogs, toads, lizards, anoles, dogs (pedigreed dogs and mutts) cats, many many foundlings and a pair US Navy issued guinea pigs. All of the four legged furry kids are/were part of the family.

My daughter, now a wildlife biologist, made pets out of just about anything (just like the "old man" when I was a kid).
She had a rat who once figured out how to open his cage door, then proceeded to take down the small curtain in the kitchen window, stuffed it into his cage, made a comfy bed out of it, and took a nap.

I was too young to remember, but my older sister had a pet raccoon. He got out one day, crossed the street and ran into a neighbor's house, and into the bathroom. The lady shut the bathroom door and frantically called my dad to come get him. By the time dad arrived, the coon had opened a jar of cold cream, rubbed it all over himself, then tried to wipe it off with a roll of TP! Then there was the pet squirrel, red fox, 'possums, chipmunks in the house (I'll never forget the time one ran up my mom's pajama leg! ), snakes, turtles, ponies, and the list goes on…
They all made for a happy and memorable childhood for me.
(Oh, and I almost forgot to mention Petey, the whiskey drinking parakeet!)
