Have this box of vintage 30-30 Silvertip in high condition. And I'm heading to a local gun show this weekend. Any idea on an asking price? Also interested in the timeframe of this box design, 60's?

FYI
  • Lot Number Identification: Winchester ammunition lot numbers are generally ink-stamped inside the right tuck flap of the box. Older Winchester lot numbers often follow a format where the first one or two digits are the month, and the next digit is the last digit of the year, followed by the day.

full picture of top and bottom of box would help but as jimbo stated above, lot codes indicate date of manufacture. my swag would be late 50's - early 60's.

fairly comprehensive description of lot dating in this thread.

as for an asking price, quick browse through gunbroker indicates roughly $1.50 - $3.00 asking, you'll have to log in and go through closed auctions to see what they actually sell for.

since you are presumably selling face to face, you should be able to negotiate through a fairly wide price range within a minute or two and make a deal. start high and let someone justify lower offer. also look for comps at show.

good luck!

I look for old boxes of ammo at shows. I seldom see it sell for much of a premium over a recent box of similar ammo. That might be a regional thing, though. There’s not that many people around here that are interested in vintage ammo. I’d see if anyone would give $50 for that, if it’s a full box and the box is in nice condition.

It is full & is in absolutely perfect condition. I'll start it at $60 and take it from there.

Unless someone has an especially nice

Winchester ~ Model 64 ~ .32 WIN SPC or 30-30 WIN

Then I'll get that & keep the ammo & hunt Whitetails in the creek bottoms

I think $60 ($3per) is a solid price for a full box that nice and sharper than most and bright finish on the rounds. (y)

and everyone at a show has at least three Jacksons in their pocket, no change needed ;)

good luck!

I bought these at the Hoover, Alabama show last weekend. It's a full box, and in great shape. I saw another identical box later in the day for almost twice the price I paid, made me feel a little better about paying $70 for a box of ammo I won't shoot. 😆 I'm a sucker for vintage ammo and boxes. I didn't have one of these. And to the OP, I might haggle a little but I'd probably give you your $60 for your .30-30 Silvertips.

Sold an older full box (like 1920's) of 32 Winchester special ammo for $90 to a ammo guy at the show. I'll probably trade the 30-30 Silvertip & another old box for some 45 ACP ammo tomorrow as I just picked up a nice 1911 today

I went to an estate auction sat. I was totally shocked at prices of old ammo , saw a box of 10 gauge Winchester go for $480 for a very nice 60's vintage .

I did snag these two boxes of vintage ammo $ 32.50 and $50 top to bottom also snagged a nib Winchester 94 trapper for a pretty good price ... 👍

Traded the Silvertips and some junky 32 specials for a box of Remington 380 & another box of Winchester Ranger +P 230 JHP ammo for the new 45 ACP.

Worked out good for me. Here's the 2 tone Cerakote finish on my 1911 & a $5 set of Pachmayr's
