Vets and Home Depot

Yes true they do offer a 10% discount to Veterans, but it applies only to certain items. Tried to buy a can of spray foam insulation and could not get the discount, this has also happened on some lumber, a can of joint compound, and some other building supplies. They did give it to me on some paint but I think that was an accident.
This happened today at the Auburn Maine Home Depot.

It's just politics. HD & Lowe's both play the game of talking like they support vets, but they do not really-only when hte focus in on vets. TD

I tried to get the veteran's discount on a ladder in 2012. The customer service person came up with 1/2 dozen requests for different verification until she found one I didn't have with me. I didn't get the discount.

I've never had a problem getting the discount on anything I buy, but I carry a retired military ID. That has worked every time.

Both Home Depot and Lowe's stated policy is active duty, retired, and disabled vets with Government issue ID get the 10% discount year round. All other vets get it on holidays like today. Presumably a copy of our DD214 would work on days like this.

ct home depots wont give military discount. their claim is their arent any active military bases besides groton in ct and its only in one part of the state. so i asked them about actdu that come home to support family projects? dumb look......
but...LOWES does give military discounts in all ct stores.

I've got my discount at Lowes in Bangor NO Restrictions on Items no matter what you buy.
Haven't been in a while, may have changed I do not know, but the savings were substantial.

I use Lowes a LOT, and have not had any items excluded, & get an across the board 10% discount. I use my VA medical ID card.
At 4 different Home Depot's in 3 different states, my VA card is not good enough for a discount. I have only had it honored ONCE at a Ga Home Depot. Yet, my sister, who carries a valid military spouse ID, (Her ex is a retired Marine, she get part of his retirement, and her son recently retired from the Air Force,) gets a discount at HD. She didn't serve, but she get the benefits. I'm not saying she doesn't deserve them, but I am disappointed in HD for not allowing my service to count.

How big is the Military presence where you are. Any large bases? My son is active Air Force in ( Davis-Monthan) Tucson AZ and military discounts are available at most retailers. When I was with him at a Home Depot it applied to everything he bought.

Remodeling and the wife and I went to Lowe's yesterday because of the discount. Bought some paint, brushes, wainscoting, molding, tools. Brought my DD214 and no problem!. Same at the Ace Hardware Store (similar program in affect).

I use my retired military card and they also honor my wife's 'dependent' card. Of course we are right around the corner from Aberdeen Proving Ground. I have not tried to use my cards anywhere else. The wife has used her card when shopping on Cape Cod.

Mostly Retired and National Guard, No more Active Duty, Coast Guard in a few places.

Mr Negative! Of course they mark it up and they are cheaper than many other places
45% maybe others are higher. How can you sell without a mark up and be in business.

BTW I am a builder and very familiar with prices on Building materials. ps

Depends on store manager. I get it all the time on anything for years now in Flagstaff's 2 home depots. Did not get it in Vegas a few yrs. ago but did last time. My buddy who passed away a few yrs ago in NJ, always got it. VA Healthcare photo ID is what I use.

I have a verrrrry good in with HD and can say I know they do indeed give the discount with proof. Many times it could simply be the cashier simply not knowing the policy. I can also say without any doubt the district HD's have done a number of volunteer projects benefitting local homeless veterans. Most recently, they had a team of store associates volunteer their own time (not paid time) to redo an old school into a bunch of single units for homeless veterans to use as a place to help return into the community by means of a number of offered services. Last yr, the same district removed a diff building for disabled/homeless veterans. Not everything makes the news or is seen just from walking through the doors. Both of the projects were done with full home office approval and spearheaded by my "in". ;)




For the OP, I can also add that your local HD always did give the discount before the change of manager.

I'm retired military and I routinely get the 10% at HD and Lowe's on everything, without exception. And I live in a totally non-military area, Rockford, IL.
